I'm pretty sure I read somewhere to avoid canola oil. I don't remember details though. Can someone tell me why it's bad and point me to a website that proves this?
This is the email I just received from my son's nutritionist who just told me to start giving my son canola oil. I was thinking coconut or macadamia oil might be good. I was giving him olive oil.
Canola I would consider healthier than coconut and macadamia oil as far as the fat profile. Coconut is 92% saturated fat and has 0% linolenic acid (omega 3) and ~2% linoleic acid (omega 6). Macadamia oil is ~2% linolenic acid (omega 3) and ~2% linoleic acid (omega 6). Canola oil is ~9% linolenic acid (omega 3) and ~20% linoleic acid (omega 6). If you would prefer to use another type of oil I would recommend walnut oil which is ~10% linolenic acid (omega 3) and ~50% linoleic acid (omega 6). Flax seed oil also has a good fat profile. It has ~50% linolenic acid (omega 3) and ~15% linoleic acid (omega 6). Here is a link about canola from the Mayo clinic. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/canola-oil/AN01281
Is she right?
