View Full Version : Bruxism-tooth grinding, clenching. Connection to diet?

An ironic thing happened at the end of my fast. I lost something fairly expensive, but I don't miss it at all.

I've had a lot of food sensitivities and digestive problems for several years, but I'm slowly getting them sorted out. What amazes me is how much the digestive disorders have to do with overall health, and other isolated maladies (dis-ease as some call it). My fast preceded the journey into raw food eating, that I have followed fairly closely for two weeks now. Things I went off course with were a few potato chips, some corn tortilla's, and canned garbonzos (assuming they are not raw but I don't seem to notice a problem from them yet). We found sprouted tortillas that I will try to stick with. The chips are a thing of the past for now. Oh, how I want some though.....
On the last night of my fast, or it may have been the first day back to fruit and juice, I lost a dental appliance that I wear at night to prevent grinding and clenching. For years my dentist tried to get me to be fitted for one and I resisted. I didn't believe I was grinding, or that it could help with the larger problems I was having. After one night of wearing it, my morning headaches went away. Mornings were no longer as though I had bee out partying all night. My chronic neck pain ceased. Propioception of my upper body improved and I quit banging my head everytime I got into tight quarters. Some balance was restored. I still had occassional headaches and pain, but they weren't from grindng while sleeping, as long as I wore the bite guard. It was a real life saver, restoring a great deal of quality of life for me. I was about frantic when I lost the bite guard, thinking of the tough road ahead until I got it replaced. I knew I was losing enamel at the base of my teeth and chipping and cracking them prior to the guard, and didn't want to go back to the sensitive teeth and neck pain, headaches and hung over feelings. To my great surprise, I suffered none of that post fast, and it has been two weeks on morstly raw, without the guard.

I firmly believe now that my clenching was caused by my bodies struggle to digest certain foods. I suspect the culprit to be meats or things cooked in oils. I am so much calmer now, better outlook on life, back to my old self.

I would suggest for anyone who might suffer from bruxism, to try the raw diet and see if it helps. I raved about my appliance when I got it, and for nearly two years....how it stopped the muscle and joint pain, headaches, tooth wear. It was a great way to remedy a miserable situation, and I am glad I had it. I'm even more excited that I may never need it again-that I may not need to replace it at the tune of four to five hundred dollars. If my dentist or doctor had told me I grind because of poor digestion, I wouldn't have believed it. Just like I didn't believe I was grinding in the first place. As it was, when I talked to a doctor about how the guard stopped those problems, he stared at me like I was nuts. I don't think the dentist even knows the connections as to why we grind, just that the appliance helps it.

If you or a loved one has bruxism, and you aren't eating raw, give it a whirl. You may be able to get rid of a lot of discomfort related to it and find out if foods may be a partial cause.

Have any of you had the same experience relating to grinding and foods? I tried a search and got nothing....My hope in telling this to you all, is that it might save someone the discomfort of tmj, tooth wear, headaches, face and neck pain, and the expense of a dental appliance.

I apologize for being so long winded. Still learning to control the excess energy. I should go work out.....

I had read that tooth grinding was from parasites, which you could lose from fasting or improving your diet.

Thank you for that information. I have just started wearing a mouth guard after cracking and killing a couple of teeth. I would panic too if I lost it or forgot it. It is just one other reason for me to GO RAW 100%. I've been procrastinating, making excuses, you know the drill. So thanks for the post.
