I was at the market and saw this enormous basil plant that's nearly 2 feet tall in a pot at least 12 inches in diameter for $20 Canadian. I bought it even though I'm terrible at keeping plants alive (I sometimes get the tiny basil plants at the grocery store and rarely manage to keep them for more than 2-3 days) because I figured there's already well more than $20 of basil on the plant as it is now so even if I can't keep it alive it's a good deal.

Now my question of course is, how do I keep it alive? I'd really like being able to keep it for years as I don't normally buy fresh basil as it's too expensive in those little boxes where you get 2 small branches for $2.

I read that the soil must be kept moist but not too wet and that it needs a lot of light. I'll be keeping it indoors and would prefer to use fluorescent lights is that ok? Can I use any fluorescent light or should it be made for plants or to simulate sunlight?

Thanks
