Does anyone have the famous Kale Chip Recipe? Also, any variations on the use of the salty products that go into making this? In order words, does anyone have any suggestions so the chip does not have as much salt as what was originally put into the recipe? I am so exicted to use my dehydrator for the first time and thought this would be the perfect item!!
Thank you in advance.

I make them this way.
I soak my kale, just to crisp it up anywhere from 1/2 hour to a few hours in a sinkful of cold water, but I've also NOT soaked it and it's fine. I usually get about 3 bunches as a time and this makes a gallon size zip-lock bag full.
Then I take out (rip off) the center stem. Rip the kale into smaller (bite size) pieces into a big bowl.
I drizzle a LITTLE EVOO into this. Sprinkle in Sun Fire Salt (as much or as little or none) as you desire. Sometimes I add nutritional yeast, sometimes I don't.
Then I "crunch" all of this up with my hands, mixing, and crunching and thoroughly mixing.
Then I spread out onto the mesh screen of my dehydrator. And usually dehydrate overnight. You'll know when they are done. You can taste 'em!

Thank you for the quick response.
Where might I find Sun Fire Salt and what is this product? Also, where would I find the nutritional yeast and is that the actual name?
I appreciate your help. I can't wait to try these.

Sunfire salt: http://highvibehealth.com/Sunfire_Salt.html
Nutritional yeast can be found at your local HFS and that's what it is called.

There's also these that I made the other day, and they didn't last long! But I do like the simplicity of veganforlife's recipe.

I've tried other ones with red bell peppers and I always go back to this recipe. It satisfies that need to crunch! :D AND (I love this) really gets stuck in my teeth! LOL!!!!

sherry!
hello. Kale itself has rather salty taste. Perhaps you can try to use a different leaf like spinach or swiss chard.

I've made chips with red curly kale, green curly kale, oak leaf kale, and lacotina kale. It has been my experience that curly kale is best, the strings in lacotina kale are not fun to chew, spinach is too thin for chips, and chard chips are bitter and tough.
Prep: Wash the kale, trim the stems and set the stems in a bowl or a glass of water for an hour. They will drink up the water, fill out and crisp up. Tear the leaves into bite size pieces, throw out the stems.
My current favorite is veganforlife's simple yeast chips. I use 1-2 Tablespoons olive oil, 1/4 cup Quantum Nutritional yeast Flakes, and 1/8 t. SufFire salt for each large bunch of kale. (If you can't find SunFire use Red Hawaiian or Pink Himilayan, or crush some Celtic sea salt. A little salt goes a long way.)
I also make a lot of the cheesy chips. My husband and I love them. He won't eat the simple yeast chips at all. (More for me!) The Awesome Goddess chips I only make to put on top of salads. Once in a while when I want something special and sweet I make the Teriyaki.

You throw out the stems? I use 'em in a green smoothie!

I give some to my daughter's pet rat and put the rest in the compost. I figure I get enough fiber. ;) Aren't they a little bitter...? But, you were right about the simple N.yeast chips being the best so I'll give the stems a whirl in a smoothie. :)

I just used Kristen Suzanne's Cheezy Nacho Sauce for the coating for a batch of Kale Chips and oh my goodness! They are SOOOOOO good!
I highly recommend trying this variation!
All the variations I've tried have been really good! The only one I had trouble with was just plain olive oil and salt and they never "crisped" up for me...

If they never crisped up, you are using way too much EVOO. I use a drizzle. A little goes a long way...

I use just enough oil so that it takes me several minutes using my fingers to get it spread the oil onto each piece of kale. The last couple batches I sprinked with a Tablespoon each of onion powder and garlic powder, a pinch of salt, stirred it well, then sprinkled on the nutritional yeast. BEST, so far.

I'm making some kale chips now, with some mustard greens mixed in. I'm adding garlic, lemon, olive oil, ACV, rosemary and basil, and a little slippery elm to help bind it to the leaves (experimenting here-knowing it gels up like flax, I'm thinking it will help). I'll let you know how they turn out.
I've decided I need these, as potato chips were, and still are, my big weakness.

I just made my first batch tonight! No recipe, just wing and a prayer :D I overestimated the amount of oil I needed (a drizzle? ha! more like 1/4 cup or so among 3 stalks  ) but the seasonings I threw in where spot on. There was just enough oil in them to make me feel like I was eating a bag of SAD chips. Salt and vinegar SAD chips, to be exact. I am in love.
VFL: you can eat the stems, too? I never knew that.

I tried a new flavor today. I had a gallon size bag of curly kale pieces ready to go. I massaged the kale with 2 Tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons nama shoyu, 1/2 teaspoon each cumin, thyme, and chili powder, 1/4 teaspoon fine salt, and a sprinkle of cayenne.
Turned out excellent. Is there any wrong way to made this delicious, healthy snack? I don't think so! :)
Let me clarify that I am talking about using curly kale. I made another batch with dino kale (lacitino) and it came out nasty, just like the first time I tried it. Dino kale is my favorite for smoothies, but I'm done trying to make chips out of it. Make mine curly!

I didn't know there was a difference with the types of kale. Glad I do, now. I'll be sticking with curly from now on - and trying your blend next time I get some (why do I have a feeling kale is something I'm going to be going through quite a lot of? :D ).
