View Full Version : Bad Watermelon
Anyone ever have one? I cut a whole watermelon open today and took some to the job, I could swear it tastes kinda sour. I ended up throwing it away.

Oh yeah! Seems to happen a lot more often with the little personal sized seedless ones, which are the only kind my family will eat. I don't think we've gotten a sour one but certainly flavorless ones or ones that aren't very juicy.

I don't think a watermelon can "go sour", it will either taste rotten or moldy when it's bad.
I've had ones that has been a bit sour tasting though. Not sure what makes a melon taste that way. Perhaps they are picked to early?

Yup...just like any fruit there can be those that are not good, mealy, under or overripe..the sour taste, IMHO, is the melon starting to ferment from age...really a gross taste. I use the thumping, hollow sound to determine a good one, smooth skin, yellowish patch where it sits on the ground, and heavy...but mostly use the thumping thing to pick~

Most of the time the Store will take them Back. Its at least worth a TRY. Anything ALIVE.........will go BAD. If its SAD, don't worry its on STEROIDS and it'll stay PUMPED UP.............
