View Full Version : Raw Cashew Creamery Ice Cream - Really Raw?

I was in my local health food store today and saw that they are now carrying an ice cream called Raw Cashew Creamery Ice Cream. It says on the label that it's raw vegan, but I know there is the 'rawvolution' bar that's only 90-95% raw. Here are the ingredients for the chocolate flavor ice cream:
Water, OG Agave Nectar, OG Cashews, OG Fair Trade Cacao Powder, OG Cacao Butter, OG Coconut Oil, OG Shea Butter, OG Lucuma, Sunflower Lecithin, OG Vanilla Bean, Sea Salt, OG Maca Powder, OR Locust Bean Gum, OG Guar Gum, Caregeenan, OG Mesquite
I'm not familiar with all of these so I don't know if they're really raw, especially the locust bean gum, guar gum, lecithin, lucuma, and caregeenan (isn't that last one a form of MSG?).
If anyone has tried it, how does it taste? They had some raw cookies, brownies, and granola there too, but I've had them and they're really expensive and I make better raw desserts at home, so maybe it's the same with this ice cream.
Thanks!

It's most likely not 100% raw. And some might even consider the cashews and agave questionable. ;)
I'd rather just make my own ice cream with a few simple ingredients. At least it doesn't need three different thickeners.

Yeah, that's what I figured too, so I didn't buy any. I can just mash up some banana and mango and freeze that or use young coconut if I'm feeling motivated and make some cacao sauce. There are just too many ingredients that seem extracted from a whole food and now just seem overly processed. Though I'm not even starting raw until tomorrow, so I shouldn't get so high and mighty. In a weak moment I'll probably be down at the health food store with a spoon so I can eat it all as soon as I get back in my car. :D

Hhmmm...it hasn't been that long since that was the story of my life. I could easy eat the desert packs before I made it home with them.
Since going raw I haven't had near the cravings I use to have. Hopefully I will continue to have fewer until they go away completely.
I feel like if it has too many ingredients and if I can't pronounce them all, then I can't have it. I may miss out on a lot of things, but for my part, I would pass up the ice cream.

I'd say if anyone had any doubt, it is SO easy to make one's own raw ice-cream and you know exactly what's in it, with simple ingredients. Since there's an abundance of fruits around right now, we are enjoying our own stuff each day.

Lucuma is something that I buy from Shazzie's site and I love it. It is raw.
Carrageen is the name that we give to Irish Moss but the word that you are using is different so I looked it up.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carrageenans or carrageenins (pronounced /ˌkærəˈɡiːnənz/, with a hard g) are a family of linear sulphated polysaccharides extracted from red seaweeds.
The origin of the name is unclear and references to a county in Ireland are common but false.[citation needed] It is most likely to derive from an Irish language phrase for "little rock".[citation needed]
Gelatinous extracts of the Chondrus crispus seaweed have been used as food additives for hundreds of years,[1] though analysis of carrageenan safety as an additive continues

Well that doesn't sound good, does it? Thanks for the help, Sport.

Why not try emailing or Calling the Company and see what they have to say. How expensive was it? Although is can be Cheaper for you to make your own, sometimes you just want to try something else. Hope your delima is soon solved.

I just had this recently and it's ok, but not worth the price. If you want to try an amazing raw ice cream, try Organic Nectars Raw agave gelato. They claim it's mostly raw (not 100%, but like 95%). And if you're like me and don't have time to make your own this is the best thing I've ever had. The Pistachio is killer!!

Thanks for the review, Jane. Yeah, I'd had a suspicion that I'd probably be able to make a good ice cream at home for less money. Where did you get that agave gelato - did you have to order it or was in in the health food store?
