We're going on a 9-day land tour to Alaska. I know that I won't be able to stay 100% raw with all the busy schedule; however, I'd like to stay as much raw as possible. Looking for ideas for traveling. Thanks in advance!!!

Hi!! I was happy to find this post because I am actually on my last day of a 9 day drive from Florida to New Mexico. I stayed 100% the whole time. I'm not sure if you will be doing the driving or if you are going to be in a tour bus or something, but what I did was keep a cooler in my front seat with fruits, veggies and treats. I either snacked while driving, or at the hotels I broke out the Vitamix and made smoothies. In each city I stoped at (Tallahassee, New Orleans, etc) I looked up a health food store and restocked. It was a little burdensome to carry the cooler in and out of hotels, but it worked pretty darn well! Let me know if you have any questions!

Always Trail Mix, Fruit and Green Smoothie Leather, Take Fresh Food and eat it First. You can make Cheeze and let it process as you are traveling. Pickles and Kim Chi, Sauerkraut can also process as you are traveling and will last the entire trip without refridgeration. Don't Forget Crackers to go with your Cheeze. Have a RAWonderful and Safe Trip.............

Where in Alaska are you going? Probably not southeast seeing as it's a land tour. I live in southeast Alaska, which is why I'm asking.

Flying into Anchorage, rail to Seward for 3 days. Back to Anchorage to rent a car and head to Talkeetna, Denali, and back to Anchorage. Once we have the car, I'll have more options for food. Since hubby isn't raw, will be a bit more challenging. I've resigned myself to cheating while there. I cheated once this week, and it truly is addictive. Was really hard getting back on the wagon.

In Anchorage we have grocery stores that aren't all that disappointing:

Fred Meyers
Carrs (which became Safeway property not too many years back)

and

A variety of Asian markets, the largest of which is New Sagaya, with two locations. They have a large produce section.

Natural Pantry is our largest health food store and it does have produce; all of our HFS's have a lot of non-health supporting stuff, though.

We have a large number of Asian restaurants where you can either order salands or use the bbq bar to load up on raw.

What we seriously lack is a decent salad bar restaurant. The best salad bar happens to be at Providence Hospital.

That's all I can think of right now.

PS - Alaska Railroad is really cool about letting visitors take coolers and food with, at least they used to be, very accomodating in past years. I haven't ridden with them in a number of years, but I've always had a blast with them!

Good to know. I'm packing lots of raw crackers, nuts, and apples, hoping the apples won't be an issue for flying. Having no car for 4 days will limit what I can go buy, but once we rent a car, we'll have more options. Good to know what's out there. Thanks!

I hope you have so much fun and can stay raw as much as possible. Yes cheating just a little is very addictive, but leaving behind the vacation and cheating at the same time may help you.

Someday I want to tour Alaska, so I can't wait to hear how it goes for you.

One of my favorite knitting bloggers had a banana confiscated by tsa - over the 3oz liquid limit is what she was told. (c: Maybe if you pack them in the checked baggage?

A banana is liquid??? I have flown a couple of times since going raw and I have not had any problem on domestic flights with fruit and veggies. I took some Alissas mock tuna (Almost Tuna), wrapped in some collard greens. It sounds like some TSA employee was a bit over zealous. I have been told that taking fruit is OK. I used one of those silver Hot/Cold bags to transport my stuff.

Here is some info from the TSA website:

Traveling with Food or Gifts
How to Pack Food and Gift Items

When it comes to bringing items through checkpoints, we've seen just about everything. Traveling with food or gifts is an even bigger challenge. Everyone has favorite foods from home that they want to bring to holiday dinners, or items from their destination that they want to bring back home.

Not sure about what you can and can't bring through the checkpoint? Here's a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home.

Cranberry sauce
Cologne
Creamy dips and spreads
(cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
Gift baskets with food items
(salsa, jams and salad dressings)
Gravy
Jams
Jellies
Lotions
Maple syrup
Oils and vinegars
Perfume
Salad dressing
Salsa
Sauces
Snowglobes
Soups
Wine, liquor and beer

Note: You can bring pies and cakes through the security checkpoint, but please be advised that they are subject to additional screening.
Remember! – do not wrap gifts you're taking on the plane. Security officers may have to unwrap gifts if they need to take a closer look. Please ship wrapped gifts ahead of time or wait until your destination to wrap them
