was wondering if any of you have tried this fruit before?
i was going to buy one in china town but i had to walk back/get the train and i really couldnt be bothered to carry it so i decided to leave it till next time....
Most people i spoke to say it taste nice but smells really bad....
on wiki it says..
The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust. The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia.
hmm im still going to try it.....

I tried it a few months back. On its own it had a slight aftertaste of garlic, onions and sweat socks. I made a DELICIOUS durian vanilla pudding with it though.

It is always an experience with a durian in your home. it's like bringing a pet home. lol You feel a presence from the fruit. Within a day or two your house will fill with the smell of it, and then you will see it split a little, it calls you to it. You might find it easy or heard to open it, what ever you do, don't force it, you have to wait until it wants to be opened.
And...Yum! it reminds me of onion and cheese sauce. LOL, but in a nicer, sweeter way. I like to turn it into dehydrated wraps and warp strawberry "sauce" and cashew cheeze in it. So good.

I managed to eat one side of the durian. I'm not a fan, to say the least. Firstly, it stinks. It taste like a mixture of onion, custard, and caramel. It's definately an acquired taste (like blue cheese).
oh ugh, the stinky fruit. it really does smell like rotten sweat socks that have been fermenting in a gym back for two months. and it tastes like custardy banana cream pie mixed with sulfury garlicy oniony rotten eggs.
it's thoroughly loathesome. frozen is even worst than the fresh ones.
BUT! while my nose and my brain said no, No NO! when i ate it my mouth and my body said yes, Yes, YES! it was the strangest experience with food i have ever had. weird. i hated it but i wanted more...
have fun with that.

I like it. Creamy, custard-like, mild onion flavor but sweet, very interesting taste. :)

I'm thinking about trying one of these things. How much does a durian typically cost? I don't wanna pay a whole lot for something I might hate.

The first time I tried durian, I spit it out promptly. It was gross and I didn't think I'd ever try it again.
But, I was on a retreat and they had a few durians on the counter that everyone was trying. My nose was stuffed up and I couldn't smell it so I tried it again.
It was absolutely delicious! My body loved it! After this heavenly experience, I overate durian for about a week. I loved the smell. I loved how it made me feel...so relaxed and calm.
After this week, I burned out on it. It has been a couple years since I've had it.
Eating durian is definately an experience. It is loaded with tryptophan, that's why it makes you feel so blissful and relaxed. It's easy to see how some people can get addicted to it. Honestly, I felt that way during the week that I overate it. I just couldn't get enough.
I recommend that you plug your nose when you eat it.

Oh yea i forgot about the tryptophan......i'll get 1 next week for sure....
OK -- so I had this in Chinatown in NYC (is that where you are, or another big city?), and I LOVED it. It was SO WEIRD, but I loved it. My husband, on the other hand, did not want to kiss me after I ate it. He said I'd still smell from the other side of the street and some other funny things.
It made me feel really good. I was in higher spirits after I ate it, for sure. And I had the same sort of feeling as when I have a wheatgrassed up yummy juice or smoothie. It was VIBRANT.
And I can see how people say there are some libido-enhancing effects. But they're worthless if your spouse or whoever you want to make out with is, not partaking in the durian.
aslraw -- I'm not sure exactly where you are, but you can usually find them in Asian markets. I hope that helps...

LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT.
It's the thing I want to eat before I die. My last meal would be fresh durian. That's all I want.
I grew up with it. Majority of people in my country loves it. Only a small minority can't stand the smell. Oh well, their loss. More for me!
Edit to say I'm running out to get some right now. This thread is making me hungry!

Durian makes me really high. You can say relaxed, mellow, in high spirits, inspired etc--but it is definately a very strange and wonderful gift from the universe.
You can also buy it frozen in asian shops. I think (??) its less likely to irradiated that way.
I hope it doesn't become a controlled substance=p

i love it.... but i can't eat it by it self. the only way i can eat it is with mangos. the first time i hated it then about a yer later i tryed it again and loved it.
I absolutely LOVE durian and so does my 2 year old, who has been eating it from 8 months. At times I feel addicted to it and can eat some every day for a week. That being said, other family members are REALLY put off by the smell and won't come near the house if there is even a faint durian smell.
I think ,after speaking to others, it's a love it or hate it type of thing. Try for yourself which one you are.

I love Durian. It tastes like sweet onions and cheese mixed with egg custard and skin like chicken. I have only had the frozen ones. I would love to find some fresh ones. Do they grow in the USA?:p
Sun Child- can you pass on your recipe for the Duran wrapes?
sweet onions and cheese mixed with egg custard and skin like chicken.

I only got a hint of durian when i ate some durian-almond ice cream. It was just like regular ice cream, sweet cold and creamy, but there was a very strong, distinctive flavor. It was almost a familiar flavor -- oniony, kind of musky -- like the body odor of someone who naturally smells really good and satisfying. haha! does anyone know what i mean? I loved it! It was absolutely delicious. I was always a fan of really smelly cheeses and stuff.

haha! don't knock it till you try it y'all!
doesn't anyone remember dipping their french fries in their vanilla milkshake? Or adding sharp cheddar cheese to apple pie? Or caramelizing onion? Or having a sharp, smokey cheese with sweet raspberry jam? These flavors were made for each other! and durian has them all, i think. I can't wait to try a fresh one!

well revvell, now's your chance to experience this time honored flavor combination sensation the raw and healthy way through the amazing durian fruit!;) jk, i'm not trying to force anyone to like it.
By chance i spotted some dried durian at the co-op just a minute ago. I got the bulk jar down off the shelf and very very nervously opened it. I had only ever experienced durian ice cream, and so i wasn't sure just how strong and awful the smell of dried durian would be. But to my surprise, I wasn't met with a gym sock smell, or even a cheese smell. it was a sweet, creamy, musky smell. It was quite aromatic and it made my mouth water. It tasted really amazing as well, a little bit like dried mango meets dried banana meets the sweetest possible onion. I got a little bit and brought it home, whipped up a smoothie, and right now it's chillin in the freezer and will be icecream before the day is done.

Already have. Couldn't get the nasty taste out of my mouth for HOURS. There's an Asian market not all that far from us which carries durian. Wont touch it.
