View Full Version : Fig Virgin
I have never eaten a fig. Unless you count the figs in Fig Newtons?
I see them now at Costco. I popped open the container to feel them and they are very soft.
Can you tell me what I'm looking for in buying them? Soft - firm?
Do you just pop them into your mouth and chew away?
Honestly - I don't have a clue... Thanks! *Ü*

Hey! Are these dried figs? Or fresh figs? Gotta watch drying for No. 1 - sulphur dioxide (preservative) and No. 2 - for heat dried.
If they are fresh, yeah, you want them to be kinda squooshy, soft.
Nothing like a fresh fig except for fresh blueberries, fresh strawberries, fresh mangos, well, you get the picture! :p

The dark soft mission figs are my favorite. I get them from the local produce stand, PCC, or Central Market. The latter are the best.
I've had some good and some bad figs from Costco. Last year was a bad year. I'm not buying them from Costco again. They looked good, but they were hollow in the center and most of them had dried out inside. I had to throw out over half of them.

Yes, you can just pop them in your mouth. They are so good. They also mix well with strawberries. Use them in smoothies, ice cream, pies, oh so good.
Thank you Veganforlife ~ I'm pretty sure they're fresh as they're in a hard, molded plasticy container each nestled in their own space.
Thank you RawKnitster ~ I guess I'm leary of the figs at Costco as well. They seem dried out. But, I don't have anything to compare them to, so I wasn't sure. They seemed hollow-ish very full and soft. I can try them and always take them back, Costco's so good with returns.
Thank you Mamoo ~ I really didn't know if you just ate them 'as is' or had to prepare them some way! *Ü*

Go for it! I will give them another look, too. After all the previous year Costco's figs were the same type and they were excellenct.
I know two people with fig trees here in Washington, both very different. The summer isn't always long enough to ripen them. Shouldn't be a problem this year. :)

If you see a Tree in someone's Yard, Stop and ask if you can taste a Few and you can see First Hand..........The JOY of a Good Fig. If you find the Perfect Fig, just put it in your Mouth, Close your Mouth.........and it will MELT..........

I peel mine...They grow really fast..you could plant one in your yard. They grow in abundsance & have a short season. Ilove them especially when it's hot. They'll definitely help you go to the bathroom!!!

I guess you could eat the skin but personally id recomened you peel the skin off...(doesnt taste that great plus kinda unhygenic if you ask me)
and usually the softer they are the riper they are....i find darker figs to be sweeter but thats not allways true as some greenish/purplish figs are also very sweet....
i love figs though in the uk there kind of expensive....and i know how cheap they can be in other countries like spain and waaay cheaper in pakistan.....so after buying them in other countrys im reluctant to spend like 1pound(like a dollar 50) on 1 meezly fig....

I snack on them fairly often right out of the bag. It has been a long time since I made this party snack so I am trying to recall it as I type it. Cut the tip off of a bunch of calimyrna figs, scoop out the contents with a small spoon, saving it into a mixing bowl. Mix in some chopped walnuts, honey, cocoa or carob powder, cinammon, and maybe there were some chopped dates, with the scooped out contents of the figs. Repack this mix into the fig. Enjoy.
Wow - thank you Everyone for helping me with this. I do appreciate it! *Ü*

I've been buying the Costco figs... not as good as the ones I pick up at the local veggie/fruit stand, but I can't always get them there.
Just don't try to eat that hard little stem end on them... otherwise, ENJOY! :p
