View Full Version : Kitchen Gadgets!
I'd like to start a thread on kitchen gadgets. Do we need these? Oh ~ probably not - ha! :D But I just love gadgets -- anything that makes my prep time faster or easier or heck - just MORE FUN! :D
I hope you'll add your favorite gadget(s)!
This vegetable peeler (http://www.amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-Piranha-4-Inch-Swivel/dp/B000B6NXNY/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1248549307&sr=8-6) is the best one I've ever used. Back when I got it, I ordered it from QVC (they no longer carry it) - but it's starting to make it into stores locally now.
This peeler will peel a sweet pepper or mango like nobody's business.
Under $8.00

I use this mandoline (http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.K5662.desc.Fuller-Kitchen-Solutions-VBlade-Mandoline-Slicing-Kit)all the time. I did order this from QVC and they still carry it.
I dehydrated over 30 gallon ziploc bags full of apples last fall. I used this for the whole shebang.
It works like a charm on cucumbers in Cucumber Arame Salad (http://renegadehealth.com/blog/raw-food-recipe-for-cucumber-arame-salad/).

I use a lot of canning jars for food storage - in the cupboard, fridge and freezer. These plastic lids (http://www.amazon.com/Ball-Plastic-Storage-Cap-Reg/dp/B000OFMT0A/ref=pd_sim_k_3) are so nice. You cannot use them for canning however. I recently bought 2 more boxes of them at Walmart in their canning section. They come in regular and wide mouth.
i love the saladacco or spiralizer. really, i love that thing.

Right now, I'm loving my cherry pitter!!! It's cherry season where I live and I've been freezing cherries like crazy. I wash them, pit them, lay them out on a cookie tray and stick them in the freezer until they are frozen. Then I put them into food saver bags and use my food saver to remove the air and seal them. I'm already dreaming about the yummy smoothies I will be having all winter long with these delicious cherries!!

It really has to be my stick blender. There is almost not the thing it cant do. I even found out that it was much more effective and faster at making "nut butter" than my food processor. It can even handle frozen fruit. Fast and strong, couldent ask for more :)

Hi ShantiLove ~ Would you share which brand & model your stick blender is? That's really something that it can make nut butter! *Ü*

Do you also have a regular blender? What does the stick blender do more? My mom had gotten one once and I've used it once and never again. I find a normal blender blends incredibly better and is far easier to clean so I've never gotten the point of stick blenders, I can't find any advantages to them, just disadvantages.

I haven't used my immersion blender much since going raw - but I used to use it all the time when I low carbed. It was especially good for things like hot soup. I could put the imm. blender right down into the pot and blend as it's not a good idea to blend hot things in the blender. I used it alot, "back in the day". ;)

Love my mango slicer/corer!
I want one of those things! I saw one in Hy-Vee the other day for $11.00 and almost picked it up, but felt too guilty after shelling out nearly $200.00 on a Vita-Mix. Guilt over. I'll get one next week. :)
nearly $200 on a vitamix? that's a steal! where'd you get it so cheap?!

My new kitchen aid 12-cup food processor!
It is AMAZING! Just this evening, I made this fabulous 'chopped salad' thing that I've been doing for the past couple of weeks... throw a bunch of veggies in it, pulse a few times, and serve with shredded lettuce and a raw dressing. :)
Small gadgets... well, I 'zested' my thumb cuticle with my new citrus zester *sigh*...
You know, a sharp knife, and a little handheld knife sharpener... best tools I have. Oh, I do have a ripple cutter that I like using with cucumbers.. can't think of any other small gadget that I'd be lost without!
oh, i used the spice mill tonight. in fact, i used it instead of the food processor! that little thing is a wonder. nut flour galore!
i used the omega (single screw type) juicer today for banana ice cream too. The kids love that so much.
the blender, it goes without saying. use it nearly every day actually. even a crappy blender (like mine, sigh) is one thing my kitchen must always have on hand.

I got it on ebay. It's the 3600 series. I paid $180.00 including shipping and handling. Cheap for a Vita-Mix, but expensive for me. I burned up 3 regular blenders since going raw in April 2008, so I decided it was time for a Vita-Mix since they're supposed to be built to last.

I love my citrus reamer. How did I manage without it? It makes dressing a salad such a breeze.

I love my Green Star juicer. Bad rap for being hard to clean but oh can it juice.
Can't have enough Mason jars, use em all and keep collecting.
Nut milk bags for sprouting and milks and getting extra pulp out of straight carrot juice.
Just got an upgraded sprilizer, can't wait to use it.
Who can live without the food processor?
Best of all is the Vitamix!!!

$11 is a good price for the mango corer. Mine's an Oxo and I think I paid arouind $15 for it. Yes - congratulations on the good price for your V'Mix! *Ü*
