Forget peanut butter, unless you make it yourself from organic peanuts 100% free from aflatoxins. Most commercial peanut butters are carcinogenic, according to John H. Tobe.

You can make other nut butters like pecan, almond, macadamia nuts..yum.
I especially like to make different ones with cinnamon or spicy cayenne--but you could also do asian, pizza, black pepper etc...
Yum a pecan pie butter is in my near future I think!=)

I tried making it the same way I made peanut butter in the past and it just wouldn't get smooth and creamy. I had it in the food processor for a long time and added coconut oil and it just never got like the store bought. Any advice? I do have a champion juicer, have never used it for making nut butters. Does that work better?

you can get peanut butter made from organic raw jungle peanuts, which David Wolfe advocates. To me they taste like beans, but maybe give it a try :)

this sort of nut butter is not often actually raw though. what they mean by raw is that the nuts are not roasted, to them that = raw even though the nuts have been heat treated in another way.
to make sure that its raw you'd have to contact the company, unless the label is very specific about the highest temp reached in processing.
as for making your own, it's pretty hard. i've been making nut flours in a spice mill/coffee grinder lately though and thinking that adding the flour to a bit of oil might create a nice butter. trying to grind it into butter has never worked for me and it's So hard on the machines too!

Sunfood.com does have a raw wild jungle peanut butter.
Ingredients: Peanut butter made exclusively with Sunfood Nutrition’s Certified Organic Wild Amazonian Jungle Peanuts, Organic Brazil nut oil, and Himalayan pink crystal salt.
It does have a bland kind of taste, obviously its not loaded with sugar like regular peanut butter but it does do the trick for me when I'm craving peanut butter.
Try it on a raw cracker with a dab of raw honey or sweetener or homemade jam of your choice and its really good.

thanks for the information! it's not really the sugary peanut butter i miss, it's mostly the taste of peanut sauce like you find in thai food that i miss. But if it's not available in a raw form and really it's the taste of a dead food that i'm missing, i'm willing to say goodbye.

Tahini can give you a peanutbuttery taste in a sauce if you use one made from hulled seeds. The unhulled is too bitter to be used as a base in my opinion.

i made a nut free "peanut sauce" once and it was amazing
i used sun warrior protein powder with red bell pepers in my fp and some kind of sweetner, dates or maple syrup or agave
it made a peanut saucy spread and i thought it was really close to the real thing. it even looked like it
i wish i could remember more.......sorry

I tried to make my own butter form the wild jungle peanuts, horrid. I thew it out and eventually the peanuts too. Waste of money to me.
Sorry but David Wolfe is a moron. He is a great salesman but spews a bunch of jargon that impresses people when really he's just kind of jumped on the bandwagon of whatever will make him money next, whether the research is there to back it or not.
Raw peanuts really are not advisable. They're one of the most concentrated sources of aflatoxin (sp?) which is a carcinogen. It's a type of mold, for anyone who wants to look it up.

.
Couldnt agree more. Anything David Wolfe says has been recycled countless times. You have to be a real idiot to think this guy is original or intelligent. I doubt he has ever succeeded at anything other than conning countless people into buying his brand name products and writing rehashed nutritional books.

I've had organic and totally natural peanut butter before --- it was so bland. I mean absolutely flavorless. No salt, no sugar, just ground up organic nuts. I know it was very healthy... but I seriously couldn't get it down. And because there were no preservatives or anything, and I wasn't eating it, I had to throw it away after a few weeks even though I kept it cold.

Point 1: Raw jungle peanuts are not the same as the peanuts grown in the US for peanut butter. I don't think that the aflatoxin is an issue with them.
Point 2: David Wolfe is not an idiot. He's a very good salesman. He may be repackaging established research findings, but he is repackaging them well, and reaching a wider audience than what was hearing about it before.
Point 3: Almond butter, mixed with some red curry paste and nama shoyu makes a pretty good stand-in for peanut sauce (pour over zucchini pasta for a lovely Thai-like dish!).

David Wolfe reaching a wider audience is NOT a good thing.
pft. :p know him personally do you? i do and i totally agree.
what's the difference, if any, between "jungle" peanuts and other ones? the aflatoxin is a fungus that is naturally associated w peanuts, i don't think there is any relation to growing area or conditions.

Hi kidkid,
This recipe was originally posted by rawstrength on this board. I have cut and pasted it for your consideration. I have not tried the recipe myself, but I find her to be very creative in her uncooking/food endeavors.
rawstrength's post:
If you miss peanut butter, this will take care of your cravings. It contains no peanuts and is realatively inexpensive to make. I use frozen nuts to prevent this from heating up too much while it is being blended. It should be slightly warm when you are finished.
Walnuts, frozen
Sunflower Seeds, frozen
Sea Salt
Honey
Kelp powder
Blend the frozen walnuts and frozen sunflower seeds in your vitamix until they are creamy. This should take about 5-8 minutes. Scoop the nut butter out and season it with honey and salt to taste. Stir in kelp powder, about 1/2 teaspoon per cup of nut butter. Injoy! This is extra super good with cacao, or bananas, or in a spicy thai peanut sauce (just add water, vinegar and cayenne pepper). I love love love this!
