View Full Version : Best apples for dehydrating?

Daughter's summer school is having a hoe down and everyone is required to bring one of the foods that might have been eaten along the Lewis and Clark trail. There is a list including recipes. We are going to make dried apples but instead of using their method we will cheat and use the dehydrator. I have dried fruit before but just used whatever we had in the house.
We are going to Costco tomorrow and I'll get a big container of apples there. Does anyone know what would be the best for dehydrating? I am pretty sure they have Fuji but am not sure what all other kinds they might have.
Thanks!

I used Fuji's to make RAWvolution's apple cookies. The recipe calls for Fuji's or Gala. Perhaps because they are sweeter and have a nice texture...?
I sliced the apples in the food processor. That worked really well as all slices are a uniform size.
Sounds like a fun Mother/Daughter project. Have fun at the hoe down. :)

Thanks! I wonder if I can fit whole apples in my FP? They have to be in rings.

i usually do a mix of different apples... everything from granny smith to pink lady. i find that using an apple corer and then slicing them thinner (but not thin cause then they are too dry)...
:D

Rings would be more fun for kids. I had to quarter the apples to fit them in my fp. And they were very thin slices.

Golden Delicious are the best. After you peel and slice them, be sure to let them sit in a little bit of lemon water (1/4 cup lemon juice to 1 gallon is fine) so they won't get brown. I did 4 bushels last year for Christmas presents!

Hi juliebove ~ I dehydrated over 30 gallon ziploc bags of apples last fall. I used Gala and Jona-Golds, both were excellent. We've also given them as gifts, like jane above. People love them.
I used this appliance (http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.K5662.desc.Fuller-Kitchen-Solutions-VBlade-Mandoline-Slicing-Kit)that I ordered from QVC to slice them all. I simply washed the apples (they were organic), cored (https://www.pamperedchef.com/ordering/prod_details.tpc?prodId=12&words=corer) and sliced them. I didn't peel them. I didn't use any preservatives on them - just d'd them.
Some I lightly dusted with cinnamon, but it's not necessary. *Ü*

I absolutely love apples. I always find myself wanting Granny Smith apples. Oooh they are so delicious.
