I would suggest first gently scrubbing all your fruit with a brush and some water to get off any little breeders, then put all your fruit into something you can cover. Even if it's just laying some cloth napkins or towels over them if they're on the counter. I think i remember my mom doing stuff like that.

get a shallow plate or dish and put some apple cider vinegar in it along with some dishsoap or other poison. Then cover it tightly with clear plastic wrap and punch a small hole in it--they are lured in by the rotting apple smell and then die.
In addition to the aforementioned scrubbing/covering you can also submerge fruit in water with a bit of apple cider vinegar in it when you bring it home.
You can also buy fruit fly strips to hang where they are until you get the problem under control.
Do you have an empty cabinet? I keep the majority of my food lately hidden away in cabinets. Melons, tomatoes, avocados, citrus all can be left at room temperature.
Keep your garbage covered in every room.
Good luck=)

a short while ago someone posted they keep some of their food in the oven to prevent gnats.
all i know and have done to get rid of them is to get everything they want out of the open and toss food trash outside as it accumlates. it usualy takes about 3 days before they die or leave.

Greetings.
I have the same problem but it is an big issue in NYC in restaurants and in Homes. I did some of what the above post mentioned, but I also used bleach and water to clean my counters and walls, since that is usually the places they like to stay. Keep on onions and potatoes far from fruits, since gnats (fruitflies) love that smell. I also try to use as much produce as possible. Hope this helps. Loving the locs..

Thick, thank you so much for the ACV tip! It worked like a charm! I was so excited to have a fruit-fly-free kitchen that I've told half a dozen people about the apple cider vinegar and dishsoap.

You have Bed, Bath and Beyond in Ireland. Why can't we get it in Calgary??? Linens and Things just went bankrupt and now we have nothing.
Just a general question that is somewhat tongue in cheek but not completely...
Is it alright to be vegan and kill flies, mosquito's, cockroaches??? Inquiring minds want to know. I try to put spiders etc outside but when I lived in Texas, I tell you I killed cockroaches. Rather gleefully I might add:o

We just got one in Edmonton so Calgary shouldn't be too far behind.
