I'm afraid of wrecking my metabolism with a fast. I know I should read books on the topic but I can't get past this notion. Am I wrong?

Anything will lower your Metabolism if you are inactive. So I say NO but in ALL things you MUST KEEP MOVING............

Thanks for your reply, Spicy! I'll move more and more often. Thank you for reminding me=)

Let's say on a juice feast that I am getting a ton of calories in liquid form--would the peristalic action of my intestines suffer?

C'mon guys talk me into this!=)

Honestly, yes it will, because you are getting fewer calories and your body is trying to adjust. I don't think it's a reason to not fast, though. Things will go back to normal soon after you break the fast, and since you aren't getting as many calories as you would if you were eating (presumably) then things work out anyway.

It's a good point, though, because I have thought about doing just a 1-day juice fast once a week but wondered if this frequent but short fasting regime will mess with my metabolism? When I do a 3-5 day juice fast, though, I don't even worry about it.

This question reminds me of how cold I was on the Master Cleanse! So cold! I guess that's why some people like to fast during the summer months.

that depends, do you know what your Basal Metabolic Rate is to start with?
do you know exactly your body composition (ratio of fat to lean tissue)
do you know exactly how many calories you burn off each day with activity and just by existing??
do you know exactly how many calories your body absorbs each day from the food you eat?
do you plan on doing this juice feast for an extended period of time?

I would say no in short as there are so many factors to metabolism. You can't believe any/everything you read, specially if these thoughts are from a body-building information source.

It's like asking if you have a fast will your body go into "starvation mode". The kids in Africa are starving and i think they've missed a lot more than a couple of meals.

Just do it!!!!

Metabolism can speed up too, not just slow down. Of course it slows down, when you fast, but then speeds up, when you start to eat.As a matter of fact, I read a book, where author recommends eating more food(at least 500 callories more) once in two weeks or 10 days while trying to loose weight, because that speeds up metabolism. She recommends to schedule these days on the party days. I guess, if you eat 100 percent raw, that day you could eat more raw junk foods like dehydrated stuff.
