Hi all,
I was reading the thread on making my own laundry soap. I'm wondering if anyone has done this?
I wanted to find a replacement for Fels Naptha. I contacted the site of the lady who sells her own soaps to replace it, but she uses animal lard. She said that you have to have "hearty" soap. She suggests Ivory or Zote, butI don't my son has very sensitive skin, so I have to be careful.
Any advice would be great- thanks!

I used to make lots of soaps years ago but here I have very hard water and soap of every description leaves a residue on my clothes. I use soap nuts...love them and they are great if you have sensitive skin...I do~
I made up a big batch of the Fels Naptha soap recipe (that's floating around the internet) a couple years ago. At the time, I found it to be more work than I wanted to handle. Seems I had to blend it every time I went to use it? I blended it with an attachment to my husband's power drill for mixing paint.
I don't mean to be a downer though! *Ü*

Easiest to just use Dr. Bronner's liquid soap. Can make it last longer if add water and other ingredients to it. Plus you can brush your teeth and do many other things with it.

I make my own laundry soap. It is the dry version of the fels naptha recipe. I like it better than the liquid version due to the separation problem with the liquid. Here is a link for making a vegan version of the dry soap:

I really like the dry version. With my front loader, I use just a tablespoon of soap per load. I actually use fels naptha or ivory or my own homemade soap due to the cost of Dr. Bronners. But I feel my clothes come out nice and clean.

thanks! you're recipe sounds way easier than the one i found! my son is allergic to peppermint, so i can't use many of dr. bronners products, although i love them. i found a tea tree based bar of soap at trader joes that works great for my son. i think i will try that. you mentioned on your site that you use this recipe for your dishwasher too? is it the same recipe??

Oh, nevermind, I saw your other blog with the dishwasher recipe! Awesome. I am going to try these out. Where do you get your vegetable glycerin and citric acid?

No that's not my blog, that's just the blog where I got the recipe. My blog is the big family, small income, no problem one.
I do make my own dishwasher soap though, Normally I use just equal parts of baking soda and borax. If the dishes are especially greasy, I will use the powdered laundry detergent.

Okay, got it all straight now. :) So, it's WASHING soda for the laundry soap and BAKING soda for the dishwashing detergent?

Dimond how much soap do you use per load and do you add water? I have very hard water here and a reg. top-loading machine.
