"Binding" sounds a bit odd, but it's the phrase the vet always uses.
My dog has had a lot of digestive issues, all sorts of allergies, etc. He was bitten a few times and put on antibiotics--which I think then led to him having further stomach issues, other dogs sensing he was weak and more attacks--etc. Very difficult cycle. He was eating all-natural cooked foods, and would stabilize to an extent for some periods. During this phase (during which I knew nothing re raw for animals or humans), when he would have bad bouts of the runs, the vet said to offer him plain rice with a little protein (cottage cheese or chicken) to "bind" his stomach back together. (I think of this as being like saltines when I was a kid and overcoming stomach bug.) When dog was still pretty sick he would not eat the rice, but when he was starting to get an appetite he would eat it and it did seem to do the trick in terms of being a first food and helping to stabilize his tummy.
The thing that totally changed his life was probiotics--and then not long afterward, I discovered raw foods. He's been raw for several years and generally does very well. However he does still get the runs sometimes and I don't know what is the appropriate raw version for a first food for him to bind his tummy. Any suggestions? (The vet is not a holistic one--her suggestion is to go with the cooked rice.)
