View Full Version : Fruits and Veggies that some people question

I do not want this question to start a debate, or have harsh comments.
I am truly seeking some info. to help me in my walk with eating all raw, and also
to see if some of my symptoms could be caused by certain foods.
I notice when I read certain books, post, or blogs, that some people stay away from certain fruits and veggies, and I'm not sure of all the reasons why.
Could you post some of the veggies and fruits that you know could be a problem, or you stay away from, and the reasons why?
This is not a debate and I'm not going to question why on the reasons you give, I am truly wanting to learn all I can, and to be smart on the foods I choose for my health.
Thank you,
Cathy

I don't eat potatoes. I've read and researched and just can't find a good reason to eat them... so I don't.

Potatoes - not much nutritional value and taste aweful raw. The potato plant is toxic. It contains an alkaloid named solanine that appears in all the external parts of the plant. It is also found in the tender buds of the tubers during the germination process. Excessive ingestion of raw potato can produce gastro-intestinal, liver, as well as heart damage. Because it is a vegetable that contains a fair amount of starch, it has emollient properties. It can therefore be used externally to soothe the skin and useful for burns. It also antacid properties to help combat any gastric discomfort. Because of the possible toxicity, it is best to avoid the use of raw potato. I also read they can increase joint and arthritic pain with regular consumption. Check out http://www.fao.org/docrep/T0207E/T0207E08.htm#Potato
Corn - hybridized grain, worst fatty acid profile (Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio) of nearly all grains, can be high in aflatoxin, animals fed strictly corn can develop rickets or (weak bones from calcium deficiency) acidosis. It is one of the top fillers in processed SAD food and animal food, and we know all too well how good SAD food is for you. Watch Food Inc for why corn is bad.
Wheat- highly allergenic, 1 in 5 people are actually severely allergic to it. It's highly hybridized, can cause asthma, inflammation and allergies. Prone to aflatoxin as well. Read Grain Damage by Dr. Doug Graham
Soy- GMO, hybridized, contains 5 times the amount of estrogen as a single birth control pill. Can lead to early puberty in children and cause problems with reproductive organ cancers. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdFVnJQJCRI&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Frawmodelcom%2Eblogspot%2Ecom%2F&feature=player_embedded
Beans/Lentils - obviously canned isn't in our diet anyways, but even raw sprouted I find they don't taste very good. Again aflatoxin can be common in them.
Peanuts - high in aflatoxin raw and cooked, you can find some that are "safe" to eat, but it's very expensive and almost seems like we weren't meant to eat it if it's so expensive to grow without this natural toxin on it. Read The China Study by T Collin Campbell.
Shitaake mushrooms: Determination of naturally-occurring formaldehyde in raw and cooked Shiitake mushrooms. Allergy and toxicodermia from shiitake mushrooms http://rawveg.info/rawfoodtoxins.html
Alfalfa sprouts
Contain canavanine, an amino acid that can worsen lupus. Large enough amounts could, in theory, create problems with immune function. http://rawveg.info/rawfoodtoxins.html
Notice most of these items are common in the american diet and highly processed and manufactured. If we were eating naturally it's very doubtful we'd be craving, wheat, corn, potatoes and soy. I don't consider those regular in my diet anyways and there are much more nutritional foods to choose from that don't support the destruction of forests to make way for huge crops for cattle feed and processed foods.

Fruits & veges I have problems with:
Nightshades (e.g. tomatoes, peppers): They cause all kinds of skin problems.
Zucchini: Really difficult to digest and gas forming.
Anything fermented (e.g. kimchi): Same as above.
Mushrooms: Same as above, and they aren't appetizing by themselves.
Most of these foods don't have very many calories, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue anyway.

The only one i question out of those is seedless watermelon.
People have Genetically modified plants to have no seeds. To the plant it is natural to pass on seeds especially if it is healthy. A seedless plant cannot reproduce obviously. However they aren't hybridizing the plants to naturally not have seeds, they're genetically altering them in some way that the plant knows it shouldn't create seeds because something is not right and it never produces seeds to prevent reproduction.
Nature is very smart and stops working properly when genetically altered. I find it almost impossible to find seeded watermelons nowadays. Growing up almost every store had both and now I can't find them. So i don't know how nutritious a GMO's watermelon would be if the plant doesn't want to reproduce because it thinks it's unfit to do so.
I have not had any problems eating large amounts of mangoes and bananas weekly. Sometimes i go through phases where i dont want to eat them for a week and i go to berries and melons.
Pineapple i eat once in a while just because i don't crave it, cherries i eat in season by the bowl.

However - I've read that seedless grapes was a natural varient - and subsequently propagated by cuttings....so I eat those...

Former plant geneticist here, I was just reading an article about how they make seedless watermelons. Plants have an even number of sets of DNA but seedless watermelons are triploid, meaning they have three sets. They are unable to reproduce, obviously. The way they get the seed to become triploid can vary.
Some methods are using heat, shock (didn't say how they shocked seeds...pictures of Joan Rivers, or what) but the most reliable way is to use the chemical colchicine. Colchicine is a medicine used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis and other autoimmune disorders, but it also causes genetic mutations in plants. They treat the seeds and cause them to become triploid. Of course they have to treat every batch of seeds because the plant doesn't reproduce. They interplant them with normal watermelons so that they can be pollinated in the normal way. So, basically we are eating fruit grown from a seed treated with a substance that causes genetic mutations. The amount of colchicine that ends up in the fruit is probably microscopic to non existant BUT it may also cause genetic mutations that cause variability in other parts of the plant. I swear I can taste the difference.
There are other varieties of watermelon that are CALLED seedless but have been bred to reduce the seed coat so that it is very thin and therefore edible. Those are the ones that have the thin white seeds throughout. But I don't know how to tell those from the genetically altered ones which might also have little non-viable seeds.
So that is your science lesson for today if anyone was interested.

That is very interesting.
It seems like the days I eat more veggies, I have more problems with constipation, bloating, not feeling good, low energy, etc..
But when I eat fruit, green smoothies, and simple salads, I do better.
I just worry about getting all the nutrients in, and leaving out the foods that may help get other vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in my diet.
I also dread the winter when all this fruit will be hard to find, and a lot more expensive :(
Thanks and everyone keep sending their thoughts and ideas :D

Cathy are you combining fruits or fats with vegetables? Most veggies are starch and are hard to digest with other foods. Fruits and greens can be assimilated at the same time together with no problems. I find the more i eat like that the easier it is to eat things like broccoli or cauliflower once in a while without digestion problems or bloating.
Also i don't think there's many vitamins in vegetables that you can't get from fruits and greens. Nor have i ever ravenously craved a carrot or a zuchinni. I have craved romaine, or spinach or fruit. So i wouldn't fret about not eating veggies every day. What animal does?

I'd rather eat things that taste good and are beneficial. Honestly corn has no nutritional value and it's very addicting, your body will be missing out on a lot of nutrients if it's something that's a staple to your weekly diet.

There is little difference between plant and animal life in many so called vegetations. Plants, animals, humans and other life forms....we are all distant relatives to each other.
Humans have animal cousins. Animals have plant cousins. Plants have amebae cousins. Even those have micororganism cousins. One species blends in into another according to biology and the evolutionary scale.
Hell, unless you are fruitarian that eats only food fallen from a tree....you can kill plant life just as bad as you kill animal life. I am sure plants ain't happy that you are eating them as much as an animal would. I know a head of lettuce screams unheard pain noises by humans when you pull it out of the ground for food. And wheat grass cries when you pull them out the dirt to make wheat grass juice. Poor tomato is stabbed to death when you jullienne it to make a salad.
A life is a life....and tasty too.

Same here ,lol...... I guess it comes to listen to our body, what it naturally doesn't like we shouldn't consider to eat that, perhaps give a try but if your body still repulse it, then nop. I cannot handle any sprouted beans, i don't like alfafa sprout but eat most of sprouts. Some people don't do good with fruits and i don't do well without them.

I got my info on seedless watermelon straight from an article for producers on how to grow seedless watermelon. There are several definitions of "genetically modified." If by GM, they mean the DNA of another species is actually inserted into the DNA of the plant (usually by means of e.coli bacteria or modified viruses) then the list of yours would include wheat, as in "Round up Ready Wheat" which has been genetically modified with a gene that makes the farmer able to spray it with Roundup, which kills weeds but used to also kill the wheat. Guess who makes Roundup? Monsanto. This caused the whole can of worms where they want to go into farmer's fields and test for the presence of roundup ready wheat. Because it is patent protected, they then want to be able to confiscate the whole crop, even if the wheat got there by the natural process of pollination. This has actually happened and there was recently a huge court case about it, probably discussed on this board. I believe the local farmer prevailed in this case, yay.

Oh my, you won't believe this, but I was giving my daughter my left overs from yesterday, which consisted of Portabella Mushrooms that had been marinated. Our little Yorkie which LOVES raw veggies and fruits, was standing there and some of the mushroom fell to the floor, she went over to it, but would not eat it. My daughter picked her up, and offered her another bigger piece of mushroom, she still would not eat it and even turned her head.
My daughter and I were just on here reading all of your replays, so we thought it was very interesting. We took out a piece of zucchini that had been marinated in the same stuff, and she ate it right up!!! The mushroom and the zucchini smelled the same, so I don't think she was smelling the "mushroom smell" She just refused to eat a fungus ;)
We thought it was very interesting, and maybe we should listen to our dog :D

i stay away from seedless watermelon, and always pout (cutely ...maybe :p ) to my boyfriend for a few seconds when i can't find seeded ones at the grocery store (and i never can..gotta go to farmer's markets for that). i eat bananas..but there was a time when i didn't because bananas in their natural form aren't actually edible, but now i just listen to my body. as for pineapple, mango, and cherries..i eat pineapple and love it, but there was once a time when it would burn my mouth so terribly. mango and cherries i don't eat simply because they're too high sugar for me..i love the bitter and pungent, but sweet? blech. used to be totally opposite though!
some people avoid this or that because they follow specific types of raw food diets. some people cut out fruit and focus on fats/greens..some cut out fat and focus on fruits. but imho..i've tried both of those, and i never thrived on either. the only thing that has worked for me is (and i'm being completely honest here) alissa's approach..i eat whatever raw food i'm craving..intuitive eating i guess.
that said, besides mangos and cherries (which are personally too sweet for me) i always rarely find myself (if ever at all) eating:
nightshades
potatoes
sprouted grains
cashews
peanuts
brazil nuts
kimchi or miso
but there's no specific reason why i avoid them, it's just that i don't crave them.
i guess the moral of my long-winded post is, again imho, test things out, see how your body responds, see how your tongue responds, and eat what you like and makes you feel good, and avoid what you dislike and makes you feel crappy.

I don't like how it makes me feel. I wonder if it's because I combine it with something that it doesn't combine well with? Like when I make the zucchini hummus, it makes me feel really bad when I add the garlic?? And I don't use any chick-peas in my hummus.

aww that's too bad! i'll take your extra garlic! ESPECIALLY in the form of kimchi! i love radishes and radish greens- also love them in kimchi. i love eggplants and zucchini.. all kinds of squash... and i even like raw sweet potatoes... i also enjoy pinapple, kiwi, and stuff.. i don't really like avocados.. never really have... i only eat them, because they are supposedly good for me. i don't like cucumbers that much, either, that's why i cover them with spices and make them into kimchi... which i only like a little bit... but i eat cucumbers because they are supposedly good for me, too. now cashews on the other hand... i could eat those coming straight out, as my dad would say. lol i love me some cashews! cashews, almonds, pecans, walnuts and i like macadamia nuts (haven't had them in a long time, though).. i love all kinds of mushrooms, too.. my favorite kind are enokitake mushrooms...
i guess i am loaded with garbage... but you know, at least i am one step further away from SAD.

just good? i want AWESOME. lol
i'd also like to mention, since i've seen this on here (the forum) several times... people say that they have never heard of anyone ever craving greens, carrots or fermented foods or stuff like that... well.. I DO!
i crave kimchi everyday. i crave carrots on a regular basis as well.. they're one of my favorite things to snack on! i love greens, especially the bitter ones! SO THERE! NOW you finally know someone that craves stuff that is NOT fruit! are you amazed?.. because i am pretty amazing. ;) oh, and i have a problem with a lot of fruit that people seem to like.. i can't stand tomatoes (i eat them anyway, and actually have over 100 varieties of heirlooms that i grow!), cucumbers (i eat them anyway, just prefer them in kimchi form), bell peppers (can't stand them, but i shove them down my throat anyway.. to me they taste like dirt) or avocados (they make me sick and i hate how they taste, but they are "good" for me, so i eat them anyway). those foods don't taste good to me at all. i only eat them because they are "healthy".. i also don't enjoy oranges, apples, bananas or grapes very much, either... but i eat them anyway. i do love lemons and limes, though! i am VERY much a savory person, definitely not a sugar freak. i also really enjoy bitter, tart, extremely spicy and very strong flavored foods (like curry, garlic, onion, raw chili peppers, kimchi, etc.. i've actually made koreans that live in korea choke from my food, because it was too spicy for them! i LOVE spicy and i crave that insatiable heat!!)
also, veronica01- i recall you asking what animal craves greens and stuff everyday... well, i don't know much about animal cravings, but i've yet to see a cow not enjoy her greens... or a horse who didn't like a carrot.. primates eat greens, too.. as to panda bears... bamboo leaves.. koalas eat tons of greens... so there's those. :) -i just thought of all this stuff, so that's why i was sharing. lol so hope that's helpful! :D

not sure who's saying no one craves greens... i've never read that before. most people do crave/desire more and more raw foods as their diet becomes more raw. it's a normal part of being raw.

I've never had a falafel but i thought this would be nice to try because it doesn't have chickpeas!
I found one online from therawchef.com
For the tortilla

Add flax meal and blend again until smooth.

Did I say what animal craves greens?
Also i don't think there's many vitamins in vegetables that you can't get from fruits and greens. Nor have i ever ravenously craved a carrot or a zuchinni. I have craved romaine, or spinach or fruit. So i wouldn't fret about not eating veggies every day. What animal does?
No I didn't think so. Vegetables and greens are totally different. Animals usually eat greens, very few eat vegetables as a staple to their diet.

ohhhh, my misunderstanding then. :D sorry! but horses still like veggies. lol my horse got really shiny fur and stuff when i gave him lots of carrots. he actually won best in show that year! (he's dead now, this was back in 99 or 2000)

I eat many of the foods with "toxins" in them. Conscious Eating has a good explanation of toxins in alfalfa sprouts etc.. basically he said not to worry about it. If it tastes good and it is raw I eat it. I have not noticed any sensitivities to anything. Also many people use fermented foods for the "good bacteria and cultures".

i can't eat garlic or onions now that i'm raw. i get sooooooooooooo bloated it's painful!
i wonder..could this have something to do with how intensely detoxing garlic is? and now that we're raw..we're eating it raw instead of cooked, so it actually is detoxing us? i know it's recommended for candida..the bloating/feeling crappy sort of sounds like candida die off to me.
all i know is i detoxed quiiite a bit last night and this morning after eating some zucchini hummus w 4 garlic cloves mixed in, if you know what i mean :p

no, i believe the both garlic and onions simply create gas inside us and it's very uncomfy. period. kinda like saurkraut does to my hubby LOL
cause i can juice garlic with no bloating... but eat it raw in something and this mama is in pain!

Wow! This place is great! Hey iwuvmydoggy, I love bitter greens!
Dandelions! Greens and blossoms. Kale is great too, but I just love dandelions.
As far as the topic question here of what not to eat, I have noticed I get a mild sore throat from eating raw beets. No problem with kvass though. Purslane is another I have recently been reacting to. Bummer too, I really like the flavor. First couple times I had tumbleweed tips, they were awesome. Now, I get a sore throat. Goes away in like 5 minutes, but it makes me wonder why I am reacting. I'm thinking maybe a detox reaction, but then it could be a flag. So for now I will avoid those.
I crave mushrooms and even dream about them. I didn't even used to like them.
I pick the seeds out of hubby's watermelon for me to eat! How strange is that? I also crave the part of the canteloupe where the seeds attach and sometimes eat the seeds too. Love seeded black grapes. I get mad when hubby spits out the seeds. I'll buy him seedless if he's gonna do that!
How about the white pith on citrus fruits? Yummm! Any one crave that? Or bell pepper seeds and core?

That is funny you mention the sore throat, because I was wondering what was going on with me.
I knew I wasn't "sick" and I had no other symptoms, but after I ate, I would get this weird throat thingy, hard to explain, but like it was kind of scratchy/sore, or my throat felt thick like I needed to clear it. I notice this after I drink my green smoothie which has (Pineapple, Cherries, Mango, Cilantro, and one of the greens Spinach, Kale, or Chard, I also add in Chia Fiber) I'm not sure if it's a detox thing or a reaction to one of the foods.
I juiced this morning and used carrots, beets, celery, and cucumber, and noticed my throat did the same thing, in fact it has kind of lasted all day.
Strange!! But thank you for posting that.
Cathy
