I want to start growing some... I have a couple questions.

How long is wheatgrass good for? - I mean how long will it continue to grow or should I keep it?

Are "wheat berries" wheatgrass seeds?

What method(s) do you use to grow them? - I have never "sprouted" anything myself. I have grown plants from seed, but transplanted them outside to the garden.

What kind of lighting does wheatgrass need to grow? - I do not have a window sil that a tray can set in, and the wheatgrass will need to be enough for 3 people to consume some every day.

What is a good portion per person? Do you drink 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz or 32 oz a day or what? lol maybe stupid, but I don't know.

Are there any good books/videos/websites that talk about growing wheatgrass?

Will using fake lights (grow lights) be alright? Or does it have to be the actual sun light?

Thank you in advance for your answers!

I definitely recommend you go through either "Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine" or "The Wheatgrass book"....check them on amazon, I have both and to take in plenty of information would recommend you even go through them both if you're willing to spend the extra $10. Great info!

yes berries are seeds

wheats super easy to grow , its just a big grass seed . very vigorous and fast growing . itll grow indoors in low light , or outdoors in full light .
ide grow it outdoors in the ground til hard frost kills it in late fall .
ive some growing in my garden now at around 18" that i always grab a handful of and chew on while gardening . can grow in cheap plastic dish pans indoors in about 4 inches of soil , and both in or out doors i cover it with just a quarter inch of soil . it tastes better to me outdoors in full sun while being watered by rain to boot

I just ordered a manual wheatgrass juicer and a wheatgrass growing kit from amazon.com. The kit comes with a book on how to grow wheatgrass so I can give you more details once I receive my kit but there is a video on you tube that goes through the process that was very informative to me.

I think those two videos answer all the growing questions. When it comes to how much you should drink I’ve read you need to work your way up to higher doses because it is pretty strong stuff. They said start off with 1 oz. a day for a week and then every week increase by 1 oz. until you reach your desired amount. I would like to be able to take at least 4 oz. through out the day but since it is a whole food not an extract or anything I don’t think you can overdoes but I guess be smart about it and listen to your body would be my advice.

If growing it seems like to much work you can try to track down a store that sells it in pre-grown trays. I found out the my local food co-op store sells it. They sell it in 1 pint trays, which I was told yields about 1 ½ oz. of juice. They also sell a 12 pint tray.

Well I hope that helps. Let me know if you’d like me to let you know how my wheatgrass growing goes.

Thank you! :) I will look into those books. I was looking at The Wheatgrass Book on Amazon a bit earlier, but didn't know if it was still current information or not. lol Now I know! :) Thank you!

I wonder why we don't just use that for our lawns? Instead of composting the grass clippings, we could juice 'em! lol I'm kidding.. But you have a good idea. Maybe I can plant a section in my square foot garden that's nothing but wheatgrass. Grass doesn't take long to grow. Makes sense that it'd taste better if it was actually out in the sun and got to be outside, rather than inside a stuffy ol house! Though I probably need to get some trays for the winter time.

Oh! I saw those kits! :) Please do let me know how it goes! I would also love to know how your juicer works, because I was looking at some manual wheatgrass juicers as well!! (what a coincidence! lol!) I saw one that I thought looked good & it had good reviews, except for someone saying that it didn't juice their carrots very well.. What genius would try to juice a carrot via a wheatgrass juicer is beyond me... But I guess no one's perfect! (except me, of course! LOL just kidding!) Anywho, please do keep me updated. :0)
