I found a place online where you can get paw paw trees shipped to you, in various stages of growth. My family and I are still looking for property to buy, but paw paw is one of the many fruit trees we want to get.
Just curious if anyone else is familiar with it or uses it for anything?
It's native to North America & grows in zones 5-9 (If I remember correctly). It's similar shape and size to a mango, and has a custard-like flesh with around 10 seeds in 2 rows. I've heard it tasting like different things (banana/pear, banana/pineapple).. I've never had one, but I want one! :D
Here's where you can get the trees, if you're curious: http://www.willisorchards.com/category/Pawpaw+Trees

I hope you have a lot of property, because pawpaw trees get huge. It would take several years before you'll get any fruit from one of those little saplings.
I think pawpaws taste more like overripe bananas than anything else. Fruit drops all over the place, and you can smell a patch a mile away because of the rotting fruit. Hornets and yellow jackets are also quite fond of the dropped fruits, too.
There are lots of good small fruits, but the pawpaw isn't one of them.

I was going to buy a couple of more mature plants (6 to 8 years old)
We will have a decent amount of property.. And plan on picking up the fruit (all of it from all the trees, not just paw paws) and composting it.
I didn't realize that they tasted like an over ripe banana.. I have never had one, but I'd like to try! lol You just made me more curious! :D

There are several pawpaw trees on the grounds of the WV Capitol complex in Charleston, unless they've cut the nasty things down. You could call the grounds department and ask them what it's like living with pawpaws.
Can you tell I'm not a big fan?

WOW! Haven't heard the Paw Paw song in years:
Another wonderful getting to know names song. Substitute each child's name in turn, or do three for each verse. I bring in bean bags for the "paw paws" and have the children take turns putting them in a big, open, canvas bag. Paw paws are fruit that grow on a Paw Paw tree.
