I store our ripening fruit in the oven (the racks work really). This keeps the flies off. Good use for our oven, too!:)

Thank you for the idea. We noticed, that the other way to get rid of them is to swat them with a kitchen towel. They don't bother me, but my ex does that and I guess they are so weak, that it kills them.

We vacuum them up. They congregate around the compost bin (which is covered) and we can get a good many at one time. :) Just make sure the vac won't let them right back out. (Duh.)
I've also noticed they are much easier to swat between hands if one's hands are wet, though why that should make a diff... but they can't escape.
My goal used to be a fruit-fly-free house. Since starting raw we've not managed that. :( Part of the problem is that our compost pile outside was not getting managed properly so it was generating a fruit fly problem -- they got into the house and I haven't been able to entirely get rid of them.

You can also take a little bit of apple cider vinegar and pour it at the bottom of a bottle (my boyfriend drinks Vitamin Water, so I used one of those empty bottles). Make a funnel out of a piece of paper and stick it in the opening of the bottle. The fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar, so they fly down and can't find their way out. :D

I bought a lot of cheese cloth and I cover every thing.
