kombucha mother breeding

so I am attempting to make 2 kombucha mothers from scratch.

There is a mass forming, but it seems very dark, I expected it to be light? I was concerned maybe I had mold growing.

How do I tell if its just the mother forming or if its mold?

Mold on a scoby looks like mold on anything else, dark & hairy. If what you are seeing looks dark and stringy it's probably the yeast threads and it's completely normal.
