Plantain (It cans be eaten raw if ripe) also known as Musa Paradisiaca.
I have been doing research to find out if my daughter has the right nutrients as per recommended for children. I didn't know if the regular banana were the paradisiaca or sapientum, well the regular one are sapientum and the plantain are the paradisiaca.

The kale is chinese kale.
OK, I WENT Back to check. For the Kale, this is Protein (g), Fat(g), sugar(g), fiber(g),
for the banana and plantain, there isn't any measure only indicate protein, fat, sugar and fiber, the vitamin and minerals are still in mg
page 193 it is said 96.5

I didn't think that you could eat them raw and only eat them cook. But i google and some did eat them raw but waited the turn yellow. I must be hard to get that state.
Yes this is in gram, so basically, you seem to eat pure protein, lol...
I found that from the book Vegetables and Fruits (Nutritionala and therapeutic values by Thomas S.C.Li
I think we should research more to make sure we can eat them raw but it surely would be a nice booster for energy.

you can find plantains at hispanic and asian markets.. they sell them at my local vietnamese/mexican grocer (weird combination, i know. lol) but um.. yeah. :)
i don't see why you couldn't eat them raw. you could just stick them in a green smoothie & add other stuff to make them more palatable.. you can also probably slice them very thin & dehydrate them to make "chips"... since they're pretty starchy, like a potato.

I love mother nature
I found also that strawberry has 700mg Vitamin C compare to orange with 38 mg.... Very impressive the telemarketing to sell orange to get your source of vitamin C

I've been eating Plantains raw for about a year now. LOVE them better then normal bananas. There was a learning curve because I couldn't find any real info on eating them raw. Here's what I learned:
(1) Getting Plantains that are good for eating raw depends on where you get them. My local grocery store (New Seasons) gets really good ones. However, our local large chain grocery store doesn't get very good ones (I won't say they're really bad, just not as good as the others).
(2) The peels must look significantly worse then a normal banana before they are ripe, sweet, and ready to eat. They will also be soft to the touch. Also, when you cut them in half (explained in #3), the exposed part will be moist to the touch. The ones I get will also have a slight orange tint when they are perfectly ripe for eating (see photo of Plantain cubes below).
(3) You can't peel Plantains like a normal banana (the peel is too tough). I cut them in half, then with a knife, I score them lengthwise along the peel. Then peel back the three sections of peel. Now that I have the peel off, I cut it into cubes (below). Add toothpick, and you have a snack.

(((Steve))), thank you this is great information. I will try to find that. I can't wait to try that raw and see anything special after a while with my body. I always test the food on me first, i think my daughter and i react about the same with the food.
Thank you again!

I recently flew to AZ and brought some snacks along. I made the mistake of sharing my quart-size ziplock of plantain chips with my daughter and 8 year old granddaughter, and before I could turn around, they had horked the entire bag. The way I make them (dunk them in salted water before drying), they come out tasting very similar to an overcooked potato chip. Looks about the same, too.

my family is from PR and Cuba and they eat a LOT of cooked plantain. If you've never had them before, just be aware as you are peeling them that some people have a mild allergic reaction, skin gets itchy and a kind of brown discoloration. It will pass and won't kill you. Just so you don't panic if it happens to you.

Sounds to good to be true, but worth looking into. I checked in Fitday to see what it shows. According to that source one raw plantain is almost identical to 2 bananas. Both equal slightly over 200 calories, and breakdown to 93% carbs (53-57g), 4% protein (2.3-2.6 g), 3% fat (0.7-1 g) Nutritents, including B vitamins, are also very similiar.
The only real difference (according to Fitday) is Vitamin A and Calcium. The plantain has more Vitamin A, 100.2mcg compared to two bananas at 7.1mcg. The two bananas are a better source of Calcium, 11.8mg compared to one plantain at 5.4.
I would be thrilled to know that my source is wrong and there is more protein in plantain.
Regardless of which is better, I'm getting a plantain and trying jane's chips!!! :D

Yes, it would be great that your source isn't good, lol.... I will try to see if there is any way, i could contact that man and asked him about that. If this is possible that this could be a mistake.
This book is very expensive, it is worth over $100. If you check in the beginning of the post, i put some link to refer to that book and this professor that summarized all of the fruits/vegetables nutrients. It would be a shame, that i wouldn't be able to use this book to do my own personal research.

Angel mom maybe he is referring to a bunch of plantains and not just 1?
100 g of it.
Also, since there isn't any unit for the vegetable when he referred to the protein. I was wondering if this number could be mg. If so this mean less protein then the regular banana.
I am going to find that out and try to find a way to contact the Author. He is a reputable man tough and he published many books that has received good review.
But we all are human and this could be a mistake.
