View Full Version : Getting very little from my wheatgrass

I finally got my courage up to try doing wheatgrass in the vitamix, and it didn't go so well. I used an entire little pint-thingy of grass, cut it up into about 1" lengths, and put it in. Started on variable speed, went to high, but it just blew the grass up on the sides so I scraped it back down and went back to low.

Did that for a while but wasn't getting anywhere, so I added 1 ounce of water. Did it some more, it got a little mushier, but I figured that was from the water.

Pulled it all out, put it through the nut milk bag (and I squeezed REALLY hard!) and ended up with just barely, barely over 1 oz of green water. So, I got almost NOTHING out of the grass. I did drink it, but I am so bummed.

Last weekend, my mother in law offered to loan me her omega juicer and I turned her down because I was so sure the vitamix would do just fine. Now I'm thinking I blew it, and she's gone to Colorado until August. I don't want to add yet another appliance (and a very spendy one, at that) to the line up, but I absolutely want to do a couple of ounces of wheatgrass juice every day, forever, just like my green smoothies.

Is it hopeless? Do I need to water the grass a certain amount of time before I juice? Am I not using enough grass? Better technique with the speeds on the vitamix? Anything!!

Thanks!!!

Hi Tracey ~ I hope it helps, I just posted how I juice wheat grass using my BlendTec. It's here (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=51594), post #4.

No - it's not hopeless! I do it every week. *Ü*

I would save up for another Juicer since you plan to do this for a while. I have a Green Star which I use for Wheat Grass. I believe in having the Right Tool for every Job. That's why I chose not to use the Vita-Mix. But Thank God we have Choices. I wish you the Very Best and the more you work with it....the more you will learn.

Thanks guys, for the tips. I will try adding the ice and water, and maybe reconsider getting a dedicated wheatgrass juicer. I'll also try watering the grass an hour or so before I juice. And apparently I should try doing more at one time. Thanks so much!

Any further tips always appreciated!
