How do you guys use pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds? I bought some raw pumpkin seeds today for the first time, although I have already been using raw sunflower seeds. I put them in my morning raw oatmeal. So, back to the original question - how do I use these? Can I put pumpkin seeds in smoothies?
Do we need to soak these seeds before using them? How long?

I soak raw sunflower seeds for a couple of hours. I like to add them to my salads and sometimes I like to just eat them with a little raw acv and curry powder on them, by the spoonful. You can also soak and dehydrate them back to crunchy, if you have a dehydrator. I haven't tried soaking pumpkin seeds. I do not have a dehydrator so I purchase soaked and dehydrated pumpkin and sunflower seeds by Go Raw. Unfortunately, they have celtic salt added and I would like to get away from added salt.
Elsewhere on these forums are recipes for pates made by blending soaked sunflower seeds with other goodies. Can't wait for my BlendTec to arrive so I can try some of those out!
Soaking seeds and nuts helps to inactivate the digestive inhibitors so you can digest them more easily. Nuts generally take more soaking time than seeds, I usually soak nuts overnight.

Sometimes if I'm really craving a quick salty and sweet snack I'll mix sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins and sea salt together and it satisfies both the salty and sweet need.
I also like to soak 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds and 1/2 cup sunflower seeds and add some other ingredients to make RawDawg Rory's Refried Beans (http://raw100.ning.com/forum/topics/day-59-vision-boosting-burrito-1). Yum. Yum. YUM.

You can use them with dates or other dried fruit to make the base for pies.

I love the sunflower seed/pumpkin seed/raisin/sea salt trail mix! It is currently a favorite snack to help my morning sickness, but I make it all the time and my family loves it too!

Be careful with sunflower seeds, they are loaded with omega 6 and not that much omega 3 to balance it out so try to eat them in very small amounts or with somthing that has alot of omega 3's to balance them out

Does anybody add pumpkin seeds to smoothies? Or soups?
Are pumpkin seeds similar to sunflower seeds taste wise?

Yes.

No. But why don't you try them and find out for yourself? They're cheap.

I used to put some raw sunflower seeds into a small bowl and add some refrigerated Hemp seed oil to the bowl. It was simple, fast, and tasty and took away my appetite.
I discontinued that when I went low fat raw.

I make cream cheese using sunflower seeds. I make burgers out of linseeds and sesame seeds. I make chocolatey treats out of linseeds and sunflower seeds. I rarely eat them as they come.

Check out alissa cohen's book. She has lots of sunflower seed recipes. I like to make a raw trail mix and use both sunflower and pumpkin seeds that way, along with raisins, nuts, goji berries, etc., and sometimes some cacao nibs.

Just a question....are any recipes from the book posted for peeps who need a single recipe...or is it a requirement to buy the book to enjoy the recipes.
I have the book but I was just wondering.
I make lovely pate out of sunflower and/or pumpkin seeds. It's terrific on a romaine lettuce leaf boat with shredded veggies or in a nori roll, I rarely use other nuts for pate. I sub sunflower seeds into most recipes calling for nuts, sometimes up to half! They are way cheaper than most of the others and are grown closer by so less gasoline is burned to get them to me.

Yummm, pumpkin seeds make the *best* pie crust. Just throw them in the food processor with some dates and a pinch of salt. I usually add some or all of the following: dried coconut, vanilla, cinnamon, cayenne (tiny bit). A little glob of coconut oil helps it all to cohere.
