My name is Lindsey and I'm from Louisiana. I have been vegan for close to two years. I became vegan for AR reasons but also became very interested in my health. While I initially lost weight switching to a vegan diet I am still around 30-40 lbs overweight. I ate a generally healthy diet in terms of getting the right nutrients and no junk, but I often just has too many servings. I decided switching to a raw diet would make me focus on making the right food choices and hopefully make me more active. I know for some going from not eating a lot of raw food to 100% is not recommended, but I have a very all-or-nothing attitude, if I allowed myself a bit of cooked food.. it would end up being everything. So, I am looking at going until at least July 13th (a month) of being 100% raw, maybe more if it works well for me.

I'm glad to have some help on these boards. I do have a few questions.

1)Do many of you sprout beans? I haven't and the only raw food book I have is Ani's Raw Food Kitchen. She says it's a bit hard to digest so she skips raw beans.

2)How do you all set up your diets? Like the percentages of fruits, fats, greens?

3)While I realize that there is protein in many things, I've noticed when tracking my foods that I am only getting around 1/2-3/4 of the protein I need. If you don't sprout beans, what foods do you recommend for extra protein.

I'll be around a lot, most likely lurking.. :p
-Thanks!

Welcome Lindsey. I haven't ever worried about the % of different foods or protein. Especially at the beginning when it's a challenge to stay raw, keep it as simple as possible.

Some good sources of protein, though likely you don't really need to worry right now: Hemp butter, protein powder or seeds, spirulina, Chlorella, goji berries, Chia seeds, Flax seeds, maca, wheatgrass juice, sprouted rice powder (like sun warrior protein powder), bee pollen.

welcome!

greens are a good source of protein if you eat enough, and you should (i think) eat lots of them. they really help me feel satisfied and balanced and healthy. i don't eat sprouted beans usually. i find them too hard to digest. i occasionally have sprouted lentils or small sprouting seeds, but not too often. the seeds i do eat frequently are sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds and flax seeds. they have protein, important minerals and fat. i try to balance that with greens and fruit either together (i.e. green smoothies) or apart. i don't worry to much about percentages. just make sure to eat enough food!!! and eating lots of dark greens can really help with cravings. enjoy the ride!
