I just blended dried coconut with water to try to make a new whipped cream recipe for my new cream whipper. I didn't really have anything to strain it so I decided I'd just blend it really smooth in my blendtec and leave it as is with added agave, chia (to see if it works to make the whipped cream stay inflated) and vanilla.

Then I needed to find a container to refrigerate it and I could only find an old coffee press so I poured it in, then thought I can simply use the coffee press plunger to strain the nutmilk!

Unfortunately my blend was much too thick (1:1 ratio of coconut to water) and coconut is very fibrous so the filter blocked immediately. However I'm sure this would work well for normal nut milks that aren't so thick.

I can't try it now as it's holding my cream to chill in the freezer but will try it later.

Does anyone have a coffee press they could try this with? I really think it could make straining nutmilk, something I've only done maybe 3 times in 3 years, very simple.

good idea - I think I gave away my coffee press - I was wanting it recently for some such straining -

I must have given it up in a fit of - coffee - never again!

For a really inexpensive nut bag just go to the paint store and buy a paint straining bag....really, they work great, hold up well and best of all they are cheap. 66 cents or 99 cents....depending on which one you buy. I think someone on this site mentioned this, so I went down and got one and have loved it ever since.

The problem for me is the trouble of doing milk in a nut milk bag, it's just far too much trouble than it's worth for me and then cleaning the bag is a nightmare (especially when walnut milk requires no straining). With a coffee press, if it works, it would take a fraction of the time and cleanup to make strained nut milks.

I'm pretty quick with the nut milk bag but love having options. Let us know how it works out if you get to do this!
