OK, our department store food processor finally broke. What is the best food processor out their for someone who is going to really use it? A large size is preferred.

Curious what kind you had...?
When mine broke I did a banana search here and found numerous opinions that lead me to chose another department store brand, a 7-cup Cuisinart.
After looking over the other options at the store I had to agree. Other brands had plastic blades, or only came with one type of blade. The Cuisinart comes with an S-blade, a slicer, and a grater.
Once in a great while I wish for the 11-cup model, but that is too big for making small recipes. Seven cups is just right for one person, and just big enough to hold the three onions for onion bread, or a small cabbage.

I've had a couple department store brands and although I enjoyed them and thought they were wonderful.......I just really didn't know what wonderful really was until I got a cuisinart....there really is a difference. I use it ALOT and would run out and buy another if it broke. I've had mine for quite awhile and don't remember if it's the 7 or 11 cup but I'm pretty sure I got the larger. I like the larger size because there's always someone who wants to try what I'm making and it takes just as much time to make alot as it does to make a little....this gives me more than one meal out of a recipe and saves time in the kitchen. Well, that's my 2 bits.....cuisinart. I got mine at Costco.

My 11 cup cuisinart has been going strong for 27 years!! I'd buy one again. YOu can buy a mini (cheaply) for the jobs that the big one is too big for.

i have (or my mother has) a cuisine art from the late 80's to early 90's & it still works. :) i had to go dig it out of some boxes in the garage.. but it works!!! lol and has multiple blades.
for small stuff, if i don't feel like chopping stuff up really fine.. i use a mini chopper... it doesn't puree anything.. it's just good for chopping a small amount of stuff & is very tiny.. maybe a little more than 1 cup.. it's ity bitty... great for chopping up hot peppers & small bits of onions and that kinda thing. :)

me too!! Think I paid about $169 7-10 years ago.
Still working - and I use it pretty regularly - but not daily at all. Don't know which size I have....
I would like the opening to be bigger, and a much thinner slicer (for the rawviolis!)
But can't complain.

I think I have the large one.....
Back in the day when I low carbed, there were many of us that had a huge thread going on food processors.
The general consensus was you couldn't go wrong with either a Cuisinart or Kitchen Aid.
I'm on my 2nd Cuisinart. The first one didn't break, I just updated when we were given a gift certificate to Costco.
But, if my Cuisinart were to break, I'd probably go with a Kitchen Aid. It has a citrus juicing attachment that I covet - ha! I wish Cuisinart had one.
Both the KA and Cuisinart now have wide mouth food chutes, which is such a good thing! *Ü*

I guess I have the medium!
They have 7, 11, and 14 cup ones......
Now I want the 14 cup one with the 2 mm slicing blade.
This raw food deal is sending to the poor house, lol!
I'll be the healthy poor one - chewing on the grasses and eating weeds:)

I have the 11 cup Kitchen Aid wide mouth. That citrus attachment is useless because the darn thing only has one speed: FAST. I got sprayed with orange juice the one time I used it. That attachment is now stashed away in the garage.
It would be great if we can vary the speed on the FP. Other than that I love my KA wide mouth :)

My Kitchen aid works very well. Hmm........citrus attachment - I'm going to have to look at all my gadgets that came with it. I use mine all the time.

Aha!! Thank you lynnc for posting this! I liked the looks of that citrus juicing attachment since I first saw it. But, now that I know the truth - my coveting days are over! *Ü*

After realizing that my 20+ year old Moulinex blade didn't seem to be doing a great job anymore and what I at one time considered a decent sized bowl now seemed frustratingly small, I indulged last week in the 12-cup wide mouth Kitchen Aid...I'm in heaven!! Haven't tried the juice attachment, so thanks for the heads up!!!

The type we had was a Cuisinart but I don’t know what size but it was definitely not the largest one. A piece on the lid broke off causing it not to close completely; and hence not run at all. My wife is kind of rough on things so that could easily be why it didn’t last but about 2 years.
We got the 12C Kitchen Aid. Primarily because of the Citrus Attachment; everything else seemed comparable compared to the Cuisinart. I am hoping I can figure out how to use it despite its drawbacks but thanks for the warning.

I spent a week researching the difference between Cuisenart and Kitchenaid, since my little FP just isn't cutting it around here... too small.
After reading a few hundred reviews, including Consumer Reports, I decided to go with the Kitchenaid, because it was, functionally, nearly identical to the Cuisenart, cost almost $100 less, and because customer service for Kitchenaid is lightyears better.
Unfortunately, like most things, if you can get a model that was produced a few years ago, the quality will be superior to a brand-new one.
So, my new FP is, at this moment, being shipped to me! :p

I don't know what happen with you but I love the citrus attachment. I used it many times this weekend with no problems. I use to use a manual juicer and this wakes it a lot more convenient to make orange juice. Plus it is easy to clean and doesn't clog with pulp after juicing a few oranges.

Whoa! 800 bucks would definitely make me weep! I'm sure it's totally gnarly, but I think I'll stick with my $45.00 Hamilton Beach 14 cup Big Mouth. I just got it tonight. It's so cute. :)

My new Kitchen Aid 12-cup food processor arrived today! Woo Hoo!
Oh, I should mention that I got it for $155, with free shipping, through Amazon.
Taking it apart to wash it was pretty easy... the parts all feel like quality, and it goes back together pretty easy. I've skimmed through the instructions, and it looks like it will work similar to FPs I've used before.
I'm all excited! As soon as the parts all have drip-dried, I gotta go make something in it! :p
