I would love to have a thread where we can encourage each other. I am prediabetic, not on any meds and don't want to be which is the main reason I am going raw. I bought and watched the Simpy Raw video. Very motivating and encouraging. I am trying to follow a lower glycemic raw diet. I am 4 days into it and having a little trouble with low blood sugar, I'd love to hear from others.

I have diabetes. I am on two meds for it and also two kinds of insulin. Low glycemic diet didn't help me out at all.

Did you follow a low glycemic raw diet? That is what I am going for, as seen on the video Simply Raw (http://www.rawfor30days.com). IMHO all diabetics should see this film!

No I didn't follow it! I did try it and it didn't work at all for me. I have gastroparesis so for me, the best foods are those that are easy to digest. Also keep in mind that the glycemic index is highly innaccurate. They devised it using some young (college age) people who were not diabetic. And did you know that once you combine two foods, the whole index changes?

Not gonna watch your film. Not interested.

Hi, I'm diabetic type II - I was diagnosed quite recently. I've only just joined this site and haven't started going raw yet - I want to find out more information and make a gradual transition. Over the past couple of weeks I've cut out processed foods and what I found helpful with my sugar levels, was to cut my carb intake and up my protein intake - but I don't know how things are going to work out on a raw diet although I am hopeful that the diabetes can be reversed.

In the above mentioned film, they basically followed a low-glycemic raw plan. He recommends no fruit for the first three months and then adding berries and grapefruit. That is phase 1 and phase 1.5. Heavy on lower glycemic veggies and nuts and seeds. In phase two, once you are doing better, you can add in alot of things. Six people who were diabetic, two type one and four type two, came to the Tree of Life Center and ate only raw foods for 30 days. All were on insulin. The older type twos were also on tons of other meds. All type twos were off insulin within 2 weeks, as was one of the type ones!! The other type one was able to reduce his insulin use to 5 units of Lantus daily. The book written by the guy who runs the site, Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine, has all the science stuff (he is an MD) but also the recipes look just plain good. Like I can do this! I have ordered his book, "There is a Cure for Diabetes." His name is Gabriel Cousens.
Juliebove, to each his own. I read several testimonials in Alissa's book of healing from diabetes. Very exciting! I hope you will share your own success with us and what works for you.

I should add that I think any kind of raw diet will help diabetes. I am leaning towards the Gabriel Cousens plan because it makes sense to me and he has a proven track record. That's all.

My own success? There is none! I've been a diabetic (and have other medical problems) for over 10 years now. The only thing that has happened is that it has gotten worse.

There is NO cure for diabetes. Sorry.

I'm really sorry that you haven't seen progress with your diabetes. I have read many amazing testimonies about being cured from diabetes with a raw food diet. I am believing for myself that it WILL happen. We shall see! :)

You may have read them, but I guess the big question is... What do you think a cure is? I think means the disease has gone away entirely. That would mean if a person wanted to, they could eat say...200 grams of carbs at one meal and not have raised blood sugar.

To me a cure would mean all normal lab values, FBS, HgA1c, and glucose challenge, without medication. The film followed only one of the participants 6 months after the 30 days at the retreat ended. It was the young man who had type 1 diabetes. He had planned to get an insulin pump, but six months after the retreat he was still insulin free and had normal lab values. This young man also was on an extras portion of the DVD introducing some other stuff and he said he had been off insulin for like 2 years or something. I have read of many many people getting off ALL meds with type 2. I believe it is totally possible. Now as to whether they can eat 200 grams of carbs??? I don't know. Right now, I have normal FBS and barely normal HgA1c, but the other day I ate 5 dates and my blood sugar was over 200. By that definition I am already diabetic, because obviously my cells are very resistant to insulin. I am very curious to see after a few months if that improves. I will let you know!

PS, have you ever read about Sergei Boutenka of the Raw Family? The family started raw because he had been diagnosed w type 1. He never went on insulin and he is now in his 20s. He eats huge amounts of fruit, I know.
