Hi everyone,

So I love green smoothies and they make me feel great. I wanted to try a green juice so I made one today. I juiced a head of celery, 5 leaves of kale and one whole lemon. I also added a touch of stevia to sweeten it up a bit (I followed a recipe in a book I have.. the only thing I left out was the optional piece of ginger.)

I couldn't drink more than half a cup.. it just made me feel weird. So I threw the rest away and in about 20 minutes, I threw everything up (sorry tmi!).

Does anyone know why this would happen? Is it just too strong for my system? I want to feel the benefits of green juice, but now I am wary to try again

maybe try something a little lighter on the tummy?... like watermelon and cucumber or something like that?... maybe the lemon was a bit much?

Ginger is also known to be beneficial to the stomach, probably should have left that in.

I thought it was the other way around, I mean, can't it be any way?

Like green smoothies for example; you could have 3:1 fruitt to greens or you could even have 1:3 fruit to greens.

I started off heavy on the fruit light on the greens but have turned it around. Heavy greens love it. Do what tastes right to you now and it will morph. Into something else later! Just don't rush to be green heavy. Takes time.

my green juices are all veggies.
Cucumber, fennel, celery, GREENS of all sorts, carrots, ginger, zucchini, lemon, cabbage, beets... I do add apple, pear or other piece of fruit sometimes to sweetne, but i don't always do that.

My take is that it was too strong for you. Green juices are very powerful, so i suggest straining your smoothies and take it from there.
You need to get used to it. If you really wanna dao green juices with all veggies, you should start with just a small glass, and then add more as you go along.

It's a process, you couldn't possibly be perfectly alright with everything the first time you tried it :)

Come on, guys. How could you possibly think this ^^^ could taste good?

Add some fruit other than lemon, problem solved.

i would start more gently with your greens. try a few stalks of celery, one kale leaf, a 1/4 lemon without the peel, ginger and about 3 apples (nice sweet ones) - perhaps even add in a 1/4 beet.

that would be much more palatable.

personally... i would begin with apple/parsley/ginger and work my way up to other greens/veggies... but the most important part of juicing is to find stuff you LIKE the taste of, drink it for awhile and allow your body to ask for something different/more. then follow your body's lead.

Yeah, that does sound nasty. For once, I agree with you, Gaius. :)

I prefer green smoothies, myself.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I normally would never try something so strong (especially for my first green juice) but I was trying to follow a detox diet. Its Natalia Rose's program- "Detox for Women". The recipe I posted is her Green Lemonade and it is supposed to be taken every morning on an empty stomach. Obviously, that didnt work for me! I think I will stick with green smoothies for now (or other juices that are not quite so strong).

Thanks again. I really appreciate so many quick replies! :)

too much chlorophyll can make you naseous... even taking a bunch of chlorella tablets can make me feel weird. That is A LOT Of greens for juice straight up. Maybe add some fruit and make a smoothie with it.

Why do I want to go out and try that juice now????

I love celery:p, Kale is neutral to a bit positive, lemony - ok.

the juice didn't make you sick. it's bringing to the surface all of the gunk which appears to be making you sick. it's the toxic crap that's coming up and your drink is actually healing you. i will run in the opposite direction and say go on and keep drinking it! hahaa. it's a good thing. :)

sidenote: celery and lemon juice are HUGE detoxifiers. if you don't want to experience a rush of detox, maybe just use one at a time or reduce the amount.

hahahaha I agree with the above from RawHeaven. Jug it back!

I started off drink just celey and cucumber juice. That goes down no problem, even add a little water to it to make it even lighter. Work your way up - Romaine, spinach, then kale, dandelion.. and all the other super bitter greens.

Greens are very powerful!

All my 'green juices' are always all green veggies. This doesn't mean I like the taste of it but I do love what it does for me so I do love jugging it down for that reason. ;)

My green juice dosn't have any fruit in it. A typical green juice for me is celery and green scraps (mostly ribs) from wraps and salads.
