Everytime I consume green smoothies, my waist line expands. I've done experiments where I do not consume them and I do not get this result. This is very frustrating. I love green smoothies, but I've noticed when I just consume fruit in the mornings, this does not happen.
Today I had two cups of spinich, one bananna, one orange, 1/4 cup red grapes and two tablespoons hemp seeds and 1/2 cup of water and my stomach and waist line have expanded and I could be mistaken for a pregnant woman.
I read somewhere before that taking in so much fruit in a liquid form is not good because of the sugar. What do ya'll think?
HELP!!!!!

My guess would be, you are allerigc to something in the smoothie and it is causing an immediate water hold to dilute whatever that is.
Do an experiment and eliminate the foods one at a time and see which one is the offender. Then boot em out for a bit.

Great idea. I will try this.
Thank you for your quick response.

That's not a lot of fruit, so other than possible food combining issues, it's fine. Try it without hemp seeds first. Then without the orange.

I've noticed the same thing!!!
Sometime I go from feeling slender and sexy to looking 6 months preggo!
Bloating is frequently a sign of detox for me, so I've taken that into consideration with this.
The smoothie induced bloating typically doesn't last too long, whereas when I bloat up at other times, it typically last 1-2 days.

LOL--T-Bird, I look around three months preggo, but I've noticed that it does go down within a couple of hours too, so I guess it is not as bad as I thought. I had not had a green smoothie in a while because I was on vacation and during vacation I just ate fruit and fruit smoothies for breakfast and no bloat and today with my first green smoothie in weeks the awful bloat is here again.
I was just discouraged today because it's not like I'm eating bacon and eggs for breakfast. The punishment does not seem to fit the crime.

Well I'm new to the raw community, so my advice might not be as good as the rest, but I noticed that if I mix certain things in the smoothie it happens to me too. I usually do spinach, bananas, hemp seeds, and flax seeds. But one time I decided to do bananas and throw in a kiwi, and it happened to me. Felt kind of naushes? too.(thats not the right spelling I know haha).

most of the raw smoothing recipes i've read and seen online don't contain that much fruit.. they put in a lot of greens, followed by one banana or one mango (or one fruit) and maybe some blueberries or other kind of small thing (like grapes) and some add hemp or flax seeds and/or some dulse. ie: a couple handfuls of spinach, 1 banana, 1 T hemp seeds, 1 T dulse & that's it. and some people, like david wolfe also add some cayenne pepper to make it hot, so they don't just guzzle it all down, because they say doing that is bad for you. they say your green smoothies are meant to last you ALL day... but i have also read that people say if you don't consume the smoothie right away it loses nutritional value... so what i have been doing is just making smaller portions & using whatever i like & drinking it right then & there & then later in the day i'll make another small smoothie & drink it. and i guess everybody has their own opinion, so do whatever works for ya :)

are you chewing your smoothie?? or gulching it back?
I think that combination would make anyone uncomforable. Try just banana, or just strawberries or just mango with some tender greens and work from there!
Hope that helps

Sounds pretty much like my morning smoothie (banana, orange, blueberries, spinach, flaxseed, hemp seed, water). Just make sure you are 'chewing' your smoothie before swallowing. Don't just drink it down. Always remember that digestion begins in the mouth. Your saliva starts digestion by breaking down starches to simple sugars. Sip you smoothie slowly and swirl it in your mouth a bit before swallowing and see it this helps with the bloating.

You know, that would make sense to drink it all day, but I thought I had to drink it immediately drink it all down before it went bad. Maybe I'll try mixing it up and drinking half in the morning and then another half in the afternoon.
Thanks for your reply.

I know this is probably a silly question, but how do you chew a smoothie? It is liquid form?

Today I did not put any Hemp seed in and I replaced the orange with an apple, and I noticed that I'm not as bloated.

you just chew like you would anything else :) if you leave it in your mouth & just start comping away, you will be producing saliva & helping digest the smoothie better.. lol kinda funny to chew a smoothie, but, that's what lots of people say to do! :)

they say your green smoothies are meant to last you ALL day...
Seriously? I usually eat mine right after a workout so I can get some greens in my system to help rebuild some muscle. I drink it ALL though, like 32ish ounces. How exactly is it bad for you to eat it all at once?

from what i have heard & read, they say that your body can't digest all of the nutrients at once, so all that good stuff just basically goes to waste (literally).. so you're spending excess money on making a poop. :/ i've heard david wolfe saying to add cayenne pepper to your green smoothies & make them as hot as you can stand it, to prevent you from drinking it all at once... this way you also produce more saliva & can better digest the greens, because hot food makes your mouth water. - i can't say that this is correct or not, and you may need the greens right away, since you're building muscles, but that robert cassar guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUIimYiMGaw) has an amazing body & he supports david wolfe, so i'm assuming he does the same thing & he has massive muscles. :) here's a picture of him:

as for me, i would say that it really just depends on what you feel your body needs. if you don't do that & it's working for ya, then awesome! do what works! :) and you know, one interesting thing- i've even seen people take green smoothies & water them down & just drink watered down greens all day long. they don't drink any regular water, only "green water"... which i thought was a pretty dang nifty idea : ) so instead of wasting all that stuff in your blender after making a green smoothie, you can just rinse it out & put the contents into a bottle & drink that water all day long! : ) in that sense it's very frugal & you're getting maximum nutrition out of your food! win/win! : D

WOW thats the best idea I've ever heard!!!! And what a fantastic way to get more greens into my system!! Thank you so much for that idea, I wish I'd thought of that sooner =] The only problem is that I'm broke as it is but it looks like I'll be spendin more on greens anyway ;) Haha! But it's worth it. I'm super excited to try that tomorrow.
