So I just did my first 'raw' shopping trip, and have a dumb question.

I went to whole foods, and found almost everything I was looking for. A few things I couldn't find labeled as raw...so my question is, the following items, are they always raw

raisins
dates
sundried tomatoes
oat groats

thanks.

No. Rare to find in stores. If you can find out their suppliers of these items you can find out. Each Whole Foods is different too.

IMO you can control the dehydrating process better by doing it yourself so that you can be sure the temperature stays below 118 degrees f. Above that temperature cooking damage happens in the food.

Be careful of where you buy nuts and seeds because by law they can call anything raw and frequently do.

You can always call the Company of the particular brand ans inquire about their method of dehydration and the temperature used in the process. One way of controll is to do it yourself. Reading Labels are a "MUST".

OP - any "raw" nuts you got at WFs are not raw......

Most of us hard core/100%'er order online.

What do you mean nuts aren't raw? It's only almonds that are pasteurized. Are you talking about nuts being roasted or even non roasted ones still aren't raw? Which nuts aren't really raw? I buy walnuts by the ton at my grocery store, are they not raw?

I don't know about walnuts but certainly cashew and I think Macadamias too are certainly heat treated to get them out of the shells. This is because there is some toxic stuff in the shell of the cashews. You can buy truly raw hand crack cashews online but they are very expensive. They are suposed to taste really good though.

Im afraid Im still buying most of my nuts from the stupormarket :o and not worrying too much about their rawness. I figure that I still have to have a better diet than most even if my nuts arent truly raw.

if it dosent say raw, I would assume it isnt. Process it yourself, then you will be 100% sure!

Even if it says raw, it often isn't as raw is not a controlled term and many don't have the same definition of raw as we do.

For example so called "raw" cane sugar is boiled at very high temperatures, raw almond butter is cooked during processing from the heat/friction of turning nuts to butter, and almonds labeled raw in USA as pasteurized with extremely rare exceptions.

I have inquired extensively at Health Food Stores etc and the nuts there are all cooked. They can legally say "raw" for some reason but they are not.

Nuts, in order to be sure they are raw, can be ordered from a company that specifically sells raw nuts or lets you know which ones are and are not.

Thats the nutty scoop.

Walnuts in places like Whole Foods are usually dried to bring down the moisture to a level that keeps them shelf-stable. Drying can be between 110 to 180 degrees. Same thing with macs. However, it is possible to find both either air dried or dried at temps under 90 degrees.
