Ok, I just had my first ever coconut yesterday!! The water tasted really really sweet and nutty.....is this what it is supposed to taste like?

It should have a slightly sweet, but neutral flavor. It should also be clear, with almost no smell. If it has a definate flavor, color, or smell, then it is bad.

You never know when you open a coconut...I opened 2 over the weekend that had purple, smelly water and no meat at all. What a disappointing surprise.

i suspected this, cause i've had the coconut water pasteurized before and it was mild, but this was almost over-powering sweet nuttiness......

is there any trick to picking a coconut, or is it just hit or miss...?

I used to think that the purple/pink coconuts with very little pulp were rotten. Though I've heard from a few people since that the purple/pink interior coconuts are just 'VERY young' and haven't gotten to the white stage yet. So it may not necessarily be bad.

I really have to try this. I love coconuts, but have always been afraid to open it. Time to test... and taste. BTW, I'm also very interested to know if there's a way to choose coconuts good for consumption.

mmm i love coconuts.

when i pick my coconuts out, i thump them to see what they sound like. i've never had one that had purple stuff coming out of it.. i listen for a muffled sound. and i also shake it (not like really hard lol).. just to see if i can hear or feel anything sloshing around inside. if it's got a muffled sound when you thump it and you can feel the transition of the liquid inside it, it's good. :) --- er.. that's been my experience.. but i don't live in hawaii or anything like that. lol

I don't think I've ever had a bad coconut. I've had some that taste pretty green. If they are old maybe. If they are nutty and sweet and if it tastes good it's OK. I've had them that way. They always taste better chilled. Here in Naples alot of coconut trees have been innoculated with antibiotics for lethal yellow disease so I don't just pick them locally. I used to purchase organic coconuts from the East Coast of Florida but the shipping was too expensive. I've been buying organic coconut water at the organic market that has been flash pasturized. I think they flash heat it at 150-160 degrees to kill bacteria. I don't think that is still considered RAW but in this world that's as close as you can get to fresh unfortunately.

After having fresh "jelly" water in Jamaica, and reading about the Formaldehyde dipping:mad:, I can't conveince myself to get on from the store.

Although I have been thinking about ordering the organic coconuts from Raw Guru.

Except the price is entirely too high.

There are just too many other wonderful things to eat right here in the great USA. I don't see any reason why someone would want to import food from other countries. Must have too much money to burn I reckon. I think we should eat what's grown right here, locally. What other countries do to their food, especially developing countries cannot be trusted. I wouldn't touch them to my mouth................period:mad:

i can't blame you one single bit! --- i'm beginning to be increasingly paranoid about anything that you don't grow and make yourself! lol i can't help but feel like i want to dig for my own salt, grow my own garden, build my own house and do everything myself!!! you just can't trust people anymore. - it used to be that all a person had was their word.. now people's word doesn't matter. :/

i just honestly can't believe that people dunk our food in known carcinogens. you might as well be dipping newborn babies in aids & then sit there & wonder why or how they caught the disease. it's just as ignorant and cruel! hasn't anyone ever watched those horror movies where doctors keep those dead bodies in those big tanks filled with formaldehyde?... that stuff is obviously no good, just from that alone! lol you couldn't pay me enough money to work around that stuff.

I have never tasted it living in england..perhaps on holiday I will try some!!

I wont pay for those shaved off coconuts, so exspensive and hard to source anyways. I think everything has a degree of risk..if we worried about everysingle thing..we wouldnt be able to eat anything except what we grew ourselves!.. I recenly heard about oranges as well...nothing will put me off those! but coconuts...ah..going to leave them well alone...unless straight from the source!! (will get my dessert island!)

you said it....breathing every day is a risk...yup thats right. Who knows whats in the air? Lotsa stuff I reckon.

Worry is like a rocking chair...gives you something to do but gets you nowhere.

I eat in total freedom and joy! Life is so very good.

I agree. I have turned my back yard into a garden\orchard to grow almost every kind of food I can get to grow in this region. Try to buy as much as I can from farmer's market and avoid most of the exotic stuff but I still get me a few pineapples and mangos.

But, even foods shipped within the US is not without risk.

Are you kidding? Developing countries doing stuff to their food? You must not know very much about the American food system. I doubt there is a more miserable food system anywhere in the world than the US, including our unbelievably corrupt regulators (FDA, USDA). Factory farming, antibiotics, hormones, genetically modified food, waste reservoirs, pus, diseased animals, additives, pesticides, oh yes, let's worry about "other" countries.
