Hi all. I am wondering about fat soluble vitamins especially in terms of food combining. I have always learned that having some fats with fruits and vegetables helps the vitamins be absorbed better. That is pretty much common knowledge in the nutrition world. I remember about a year or two ago hearing about a study in which people either ate a fat-free salad or a salad with a small amount of fat, and those who ate more fat had significantly better vitamin absorption.

However, in terms of food combining, it is best to eat fruit on its own. Even though this is best for food combining, I wonder if we'd lose some of the nutrients this way. Maybe the body stores it for later when we do eat fats (even if we aren't gaining weight)?

Also, what about people who eat low-fat raw diets without overt fats? I wonder how many of their nutrients would get absorbed well if they aren't actually eating some fat. I know many people say that fruits and vegetables contain trace amounts of fats, but obviously this isn't enough if people in the clinical studies were not absorbing vitamins as well as those eating some fat with their salads.

Any knowledge about the issue or thoughts to share?

I'll give this a "BUMP" because I only Combine Food on My Plate, not to be Condesending because I think if it works for you, RAWk it. Hope you get the reply you are looking for. Thanks for Posting.

Yes, i have also learned this. Well, i went to a very scientific lecture about vegetables and nutritions, and the woman who was speaking said that we should have some oil with every meal to boost vitamin intake.

The way i see it (and i'm no expert, but here goes) is that nuts and seeds are harder to digest, becuase they're, like, harder. And if you have fruits and nuts at the same time you just make this big sauce in yout stomach where some of it digests quicker (fruits) and some slower (nuts), so there might be some intestinal confusion..

But avocados (which is a fruit) and oils, to me they feel more easily taken in to the body. Avos have it all built in, so i guess with that one the point is to eat it with other fruits and the avo will make sure all the vitamins are taken in easily. and oils, to me, feel like they just absorb. I mean, they absorb on skin, so why not on the inside :)

Well, again, these are just my very own, highly un-scientific ways of looking at it. I know it could all be a bunch of bs, so please correct me if i'm wrong/way out :)

Fats (avocado, olives & olive oil, and nuts) combine well with leafy greens, which are rich in fat soluble vitamins. Most fresh fruit lacks fat soluble vitamins anyway, so you don't have to combine say a banana with olive oil.

Thank you both for your perspectives.

The greens going well with fats and having fat-soluble vitamins does make sense.... a lot of sense actually! I was just thinking that a lot of green vegetables are high in Vitamin A which is fat soluble. The only thing is that many fruits also have Vitamin A, so I don't know how that fits in. But at least eating fats with greens can still give me a lot of the required nutrients.
