Hi, I'm new here. I just started browsing thru the forums week or two ago and already learned so much! I've been drinking green smoothie for about a month. I also have something sprouting in the jar everyday! lol While I was searching online for alfalfa, redish and other seeds to sprout, I noticed that the seeds/beans that I pay pennies are sold for so much more!!!

So, I just had to come out of lurking to share this gold mine! :) All you have to do is google for 'Indian Grocery Online' and you'll find many links that sells beans/lentils. You can also search Yahoo Yellow Pages for local Indian Store if you don't care to buy it online. If you need help with that, PM me or post your zipcode and I can help you with that.

Here's an example of one the store online:

http://www.patelbrothersusa.com/show_items.asp?cat_id=1&cat_name=Groceries&sub_cat_id=1&sub_cat_name=Dals%20&%20Beans

I've never shopped from there online, so don't know about their shipping charges. It's just that this store came up on my search and I have shopped from their local store in Chicago. They also have local store in other major cities. From this link, beans to use for sprouting are -
Black eye bean
Chana green(chick peas)
Kabuli chana(garbanzo beans)
Kala Chana(black/dark brown chick peas)
Masoor(red lentil)
Moong/mung
Moth
Red Chori(long beans)
Red Kidney
Toovar whole(pigeon peas)
Urad whole
Val whole(kind of lima beans)
Vatana green and white(peas)

Some beans take longer than the other to sprout, but they're all good for sprouting as we've been doing it for YEARS!!! I shared the link just to show that you can easily get 2Lbs bag for $2.99!!!! I buy them from local stores that's LOT cheaper than that. Last week, I paid $2.99 for 4 lbs bag for most of these beans! :)

I hope this helps some of you to budget your food and to increase variety in your sprouts!

Hi, new member looking to start sprouting. I live near a large Indian neighborhood in Chicago. Can you recommend a store o buy sprouting seeds? My zip code is 60625. Devon avenue is very close to me, but I don't know the zip code.

Thanks. I also hope to start with green smoothies soon.

Oh.. if you're living close to Devon, you're in luck! I haven't been there in about 10 years, but I can think of 2 stores that should still be around: Patel Brothers and Kamdaar(I think). Just park your park, take a walk on the street and you'll run into 2-3 grocery stores within a block! :)

Beans are easy to find in almost any store with bulk bins.
But my body refuses to digest sprouted beans and chickpeas even when blended.
I would love though good price links to other seeds like broccoli, clover, sunflowers with shells on, etc.

Yes, I Do buy most of the beans & also sunflower seeds & Barley seeds from Patel or Any Indian grocery store in NJ. Only that didn't worked for me was wheatgrass. They did not sprout but i was able to return them back with no issue.

By the way my last name is also PATEL :)

But are the beans and seeds organic? Do they need to be organic?
