hello
I read contrasting facts over the internet whether the oxalic acid in spinach is harmful when spinach is eaten raw or on the other hand when its cooked,
it seems hard to decide which way is more healthy to go, cooked spinach or raw (or juiced) spinach?

also I do get a mild but stingy burning sensation in the throat when I drink raw spinach juice or when I eat the leaves and stems raw, I'd say its the oxalic acid which burns,
if I'd listen to my natural instincts I'd probably avoid raw spinach as it has this burning sensation that goes with it but on the other hand I know that spinach juice is so good adn therefor im willing to drink it,

is it wise to do? is it healthy to eat spinach then?

btw when the spinach is cooked I dont experience any of this burning sensation

thanks!

I think its always better RAW. I would Mix RAW Spinach Juice with another milder Green Juice of Fruit. I use Spinach all the time in Green Smoothies. You can also use it in Smaller Portions.

spinach should be avoided because it is toxic...once oxalic acid covers your intestine walls, you cannot absorb all the nutrients from other foods and you end up with deficiencies like lack of vitamin d.
i had it in may, my bones were soft and i felt pain in the bones situated in my ribcage...
raw cacao is another poison to be avoided as it is full of oxalic acid and the king is rhubarb

Spinach is excellent! Make sure it's organic. Could be a temporary allergic reaction rather than the spinach itself.

dear Raw Runner, when you refer to spinach as toxic do you mean when its in its raw form or cooked? its amazing that even among three people here there is the same debate, some say its harmful some say its great...

I eat spinach every other day and sometimes every day a little handful in smoothies. I have never once noticed any of these symptoms so i'm wondering if it's similar to some people not being able to eat apples or citrus because the acid in it burns their mouth, like a weakend immune system. I want to find more information on this as i sip my berry spinach smoothie.

Here's an article to read http://debbietookrawforlife.blogspot.com/2009/04/spinach-and-oxalate-acid-thing.html

It notes David Wolfe had said cooked oxelate acid is more of a problem than raw. Also many people are sensitive to too much of any green as a lot of them contain this kind of acid, so it probably just comes down to eat it if your body wants it, don't if it's hurting you.

norm walker says its fine and even beneficial AS LONG AS ITS IN ITS RAW FORM. beet juice, chard, and some types of beet greens and some other things give me that burning in my throat youre talking about

Not all spinach is super high in oxalic acid.

I notice a weird squeaky feel on my teeth when the spinach is high - cooked or raw. I had to google it up as I didn't know what it could be. Info pointed to high oxalic acid.

No burning for me. And I've been going to town on spinach this past 3-4 days - like 4 cups of it per day.

When this bounty runs out - I will turn to kale for a bit!

The best advice I have seen is the rotate your greens (Green for Life?). There are items in most greens that shoudl not be consumed on a daily basis. By rotating the greens you avoid a harmful build up of any one nutirient or chemical. Variety is key to a healthy diet. Even too much of a good thing can be bad.

It's funny...I get the burning feeling from white chard but not the other greens or red chard.

yeah i dont get that burning from white chard, and from any beet GREENS except the "normal" beet greens. the red stemmed green beet greens i LOVE, but if i try to eat the yellow stemmed ones or the ones from candycane striped beets i get that burning. not from spinach in a salad though, or spinach in a smoothie or soup, but sometimes from spinach growing in the garden almost gone to seed, straight from the plant. but from the chard EVERY time. weirdness.
