Okay, I have the silly question of the day! I LOVE to chew gum, but know that when I chew the store brand I am getting chemicals and all from it. I have had people tell me before to just suck on an anise seed or something like that, but its not the same. :p

Any ideas?

It has been suggested that when you chew gum your mouth is telling your tummy that food is on the way and your tummy generates acid to digest it and when it does not come that acid is still left in your tummy and does you no good (I am such a spoilesport). This may not be true and may be something that parents or teachers tell kids to get them to stop chewing gum. Maybe you should get out of the habit

I worked for a chiropractor years ago and he said the same thing. It makes sense since the production of saliva is the beginning of the digestion process. Also it is said gum can cause T.M.J. problems.

I'm an avid gum-chewer and I would like to wean myself from it (it IS a habit!) I've been chewing less lately, but still chew it nonetheless. Yes, the commercial brands are not good due to the sugars or fake sugars (aspertame for example), etc.

But there are natural chewing gums available in natural/health food stores such as Xylichew and Peelu. They don't have a long-lasting flavor of Wrigley's, etc. but they are better for you in terms of ingredients.

You can also try chew sticks (also available in many natural food stores. A long time ago someone on this forum suggested chewing on the core of pineapple.

Not a silly question, 'cause I wanted to ask it myself! :D

Thanks for asking it for me!

I love to chew gum too...my favorite used to be peppermint Hubba Bubba or Bubbilicious...minty and you could blow big bubbles! I don't think they make it anymore though. Sigh...

oh, Juliano had a recipe for gum in his uncook book. I dont have the book, it was from the library, but maybe someone else here does.

As far as I can remember i think, though could be wrong, that it was just strawberries and maybe kiwis dehydrated in little gum sized dollops . I think the recipe was called dayglo gum or something like that.

Maybe you could look into that.

Blessings~
