So a while ago I posted about how I was feeling sick from eating raw bean sprouts. Now last night I ate a bunch of black beans that were borderline raw (just softened with hot water), and I still felt really sick. So I guess that means it isn't just sprouts, it's raw beans period. I was wondering if this is normal at all and if anyone here has experienced the same thing. I thought the beans would be a good protein addition to my soup...not doing that again anytime soon.

Hi Jeffrey,

I don't think you should be eating raw beans, unless they have been sprouted. Unsprouted raw beans would cause gastrointestinal distress for sure, I would think. And not all beans are digestible, even when sprouted. You might want to check out this article:

i think raw black beans and kidney beans are toxic! no wonder they made you sick. :(

lentils, mung beans, chickpeas, and adzuki beans are ok to eat raw but sprouted, but i think all the others are supposed to be avoided!

hello Jeffrey,

Raw beans are Toxic

I'm from the Netherlands (so forgive me my language)
I've eaten 5 Lima beans raw. (Big White Kidneybeans)
They were in the water for 10 hours, waiting to be cooked by me.
They looked like cashewnuts, and I thought, "let's try"!
4 hours later I was so sick!
I thought I was dying!!! they made me vomit and I had diarrea. At the end I had foam on my mouth!

Beans content "lectine" (Lectin) and limabeans content also as only bean "blauwzuur" (English: hydrocyanic acid, hydrogen cyanide).
Lectine is poison, made by the plant so that it's beans are not eaten, they are for reproduction!!! Only cooking reduces the lectin.
"Blauwzuur" is what the took in ancient Rome when they drank poisoned liquid.
Blauwzuurgas was also used in 1940-1945....

All my frends didn't know about eating raw beans. I know for sure that if it were a (weak) child in my situation, it would have died!

In Holland we have a saying "honger maakt rauwe bonen zoet" Hunger makes raw beans sweet!

Well, I disagree!!!!!!!

Never, never eat raw beans!

I'm always curious why, when people change their food program, they still "try" to incorporate things that may be good (at least NOT make one sick) cooked yet, do NOT translate well, raw. Potatoes and beans are two of those things.

My suggestion ~ drop 'em. You'll stop making yourself sick and become healthy which is the intent of eating raw in the first place. Fruit, veggies, green, seeds and nuts. Simple and healthy, yes? :)

Because ppl have been brainwashed to think they NEED these foods for whatever - protein, calcium, etc.

Hogwash!

Vegan4Life,

I think this may be partially true, however during rough times (drought/heavy snows etc) in the past, beans and grains were easily stored and were used for sustenance. Most of us wouldn't be here today if some of these foods, such as beans and grains, were not stored and cooked during hard times.

I do eat a very small amt of cooked beans and grains, and feel good about doing so.

My thoughts anyway.
