I've been getting medjool dates from costco and lately they have some white on them. My daughter thinks it's sugar from the date and just washes them but I'm worried it's white mold or something not right. Does anyone know what this might be or more familiar with sugar vs. mold on medjool dates?

I got some medjool dates from costco yesterday with no white on them. I'm not sure what's going on with yours . . . but if they don't feel right to you, don't eat them! I would never eat food if I am getting bad vibes from it.

My last package from Costco had one date in it with a heavy white coating. Just to be safe I tossed it out. If your concerned about it, take it back. It has been my experience that Costco takes back anything I am not satisfied with, even without a receipt.

I love Costco's dates. They may not be organic, but I can't afford to buy medjools anywhere else. Beside the few times I bought organic medjools I couldn't eat half of them because of all the evidence of bugs inside. Now I can't eat a date without opening it and inspecting first. :p

It's sugar crystals. I've had dates from other sources in the past with the same problem. You can taste one, you would immediately taste mold (in which case I would spit it out!!!). Of course, you can return them to Costco and get your money back.:)

when it crystals it means it's old but is safe to eat it. one of my friends ate some like over a month after it started to crystalise. i won't buy them that way.. it's too crunchy for me and i like fresh food.
you should get a discount on those... organic stores i know of do. they seperate them.

Thanks, Everyone for Sharing......Cosco has Medjool Dates, I was near there yesterday and would have stopped. I don't buy that much Bulk, I usually just shop in the Neighborhood. Thanks again............

I posted the below about a year and a half ago. You might like to know what they are treated with.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I did take them back but now that I know what it is I'll probably just keep them. We go through them pretty quickly at our house.

I bought some medjool dates recently from the wholesale club (related to superstore in canada) and found that there were a couple of teeny holes on one side of the date. Do you think that the date could have been damaged when it was dried?

It tasted foul, kind of like hickory. It made me think that maybe there was a concentration of sulfur in that area since they weren't organic. I'm only guessing though. Anyone have any ideas?

Rawdawgrory says that you should always slice your dates open and check for bugs and bug poop. If you find either stop buying from that place.

I think it is just crystallizing because they are old. I found some I had bought that look perfect. Some how they got forgotten. They turned white. I believe it because the are old.
