View Full Version : More questions about drinking and eating at the same time?

I'm just trying to gauge how many people don't worry about when they drink water (ie they sip if their mouth is dry even when eating) compared with those that consciously avoid water when eating?
For the latter, how long do you not drink before and after meals? Do you think just a sip here and there will make much of a difference (obviously chugging down half a litre [quart] while eating wouldn't be ideal)?
I understand the diluting of digestive juices issue, but how does that work when eating watermelon, which is of a high water content?
For those that avoid water consumption around meal times, but take supplements, are taking supplements with water before/during/after meals the exception?
What about mixing lemon with water? Does drinking water before or after that cause a problem?
What about Revell's morning drink of half water half orange juice? Why isn't this problematic?
What are your thoughts?

I am interested too because since reading the threads about this I have consciously stopped drinking with meals. I try to wait 30 minutes but it is a trial as I always feel like I would like a drink. Not when I have a green smoothie of course. But usually after a non raw meal:( Maybe that's why eh? Cause it was non raw and dry and bleh!!!!) Ah ha.
I am working successfully on cutting down my non raw. Its coming. Really.

To cook food is to dehydrate it. That is why most people drink a beverage with their meals. Raw food is properly hydrated. No additional water should be needed.

sorry, what i mean was (re: watermelon) is that it is so watery in and of itself...so why doesn't that dilute digestion too?

The water in watermelon is integrated into the watermelon. It is a package deal.

Queen Bean, Your questions are so thoughtful. :)
I'm just trying to gauge how many people don't worry about when they drink water (ie they sip if their mouth is dry even when eating) compared with those that consciously avoid water when eating?
I don't normally drink with meals. I will sip an herb tea or water if I'm eating something extra salty or dry, like a recipe with nama shoyu or dehydrated foods, and on special occasions.
For the latter, how long do you not drink before and after meals? Do you think just a sip here and there will make much of a difference (obviously chugging down half a litre [quart] while eating wouldn't be ideal)?
I prefer not to drink water 30 minutes before and 3 hours after a meal. Again, if I am thirsty I will make an exception. I also make exceptions for an occasional cup of ginger tea (as a digestive aid) an hour or two after a large meal, or a poorly combined meal.
I understand the diluting of digestive juices issue, but how does that work when eating watermelon, which is of a high water content?
Melons will pass right through the stomach in 20-30 minutes, no digestion required. They are pre-digested. That is why they should be eaten alone. If combined with other foods they get stuck in the stomach and may start to ferment before the other food is digested enough to move on.
For those that avoid water consumption around meal times, but take supplements, are taking supplements with water before/during/after meals the exception?
I do take a Vitamin D with a sip of water, usually with my Green Smoothie meal. Don't ask me about that one, I still haven't figured out why it feels okay to blend fruits and veggies with a pint of water, but not okay to drink a pint of water with salad. That is just the way it is. Maybe it is because the Vitamix blends it so well it is almost pre-digested.
What about mixing lemon with water? Does drinking water before or after that cause a problem?
Don't see why it would, but then I don't drink lemon water.
What about Revell's morning drink of half water half orange juice? Why isn't this problematic?
All that matters is that it isn't a problem for her. I don't mix juice with water because I don't like it that way.
What are your thoughts?
Bottom line, all of my thoughts above are just that, my thoughts. That is what feels right to me. I would suggest experimenting and going with whatever feels best to you.

I usually try to have a few glasses of water before a meal.
If your stomach is empty - the water is out very quickly. So I'll have 2-4 glasses of water on an empty stomach, and eat 15-30 minutes later.
I am fully hydrated and I won't be wanting anything to drink for several hours.

It is not written in stone.
I do not drink with food normally but that is because I have no wish to. The exception would be if I was having a lara bar or some dehydrated crackers. Then I would have some tea.

I apparently missed this justification. I like to drink beverages during meals, otherwise my plate is totally empty before everyone else! I also like the way water cleans out my mouth between bites.
Or is this another case of "they" said?? (the raw police)
