My Background:
Like many of you, I was hooked on the S.A.D. Lots of home-cooked meals when I was younger, but during high school and then through college, I began to eat more and more fast food. I was your typical meat and potatoes kind of guy, I had to have some sort of meat and some sort of starch with every meal. My weight, as expected, would increase every year, despite trying various diets.
A Brief Turning Point:
In 2005, I worked for a health food store, where I was exposed to Organic foods, and the vegetarian lifestyle. I decided to become a vegetarian, and within 9 months, combined with lots of physical labor (part of the job), I went from 220 to 180. It unfortunately did not last! A change in jobs put me right back into the familiarity of the S.A.D.
Hitting Rock Bottom:
I hit my heaviest weight last year, at 245 (maybe more) pounds. I was lethargic, lazy, and had a host of weight-related issues. I couldn't sleep through the night, I felt "heavy" all the time, and I was having issues with breathing. I would never look at myself in the mirror, and my clothes began to tighten, a sure sign that things were not good. My girlfriend (at the time) left me, and I began to smoke again, after being clean for nearly a year. While I was not properly diagnosed with depression, I knew things were not right....
Finding Raw Foods:
I discovered raw foods by accident. Whilst searching youtube for something else, I came across a CNN video about Angela Stokes. Not sure why I pushed "play" for the video, but after watching it, I began to think. Did some more googling, and then came across Alissa's appearance on Tyra. Decided in October 2008 to make 2009 my year of change. I discovered RFT about a month ago, and I'm glad to have found a place where there are like-minded people.
My Transition:
As of January 1st, 2009, I have been "high raw" (95% or more). While I appreciate those who can do 100%, my current 95% or more is good for me at the moment. I wanna keep my diet open to situations where Raw is not an option, but cooked Vegan or Vegetarian is.
I look forward to contributing to this board, and I am glad to have found RFT!
