Anyone grow their own sugar cane?

What climate is needed?

Success or failure stories?

My Aunt Grew Sugar Cane in the South and made Malosses. It seems as, everyone once grew it in the South.

My family used to grow it in PR, and I had an uncle that was forced to harvest it in Cuba. My understanding is that it is a real pain in the bum--the leaves are very sharp and can cut you while you harvest it.

fresh squeezed cane juice, is however, delicious

I tried planting it once, but at that time did not know that the stalk should have been planted horizontally and not vertically which is what I did. :(

On the other hand, I've had the opportunity to cut stalks from the plant and chew on it.. and that's always fun. :)

Wondering if I could grow just a little in chicago if I used a small green house?

Any ideas on that?

Don't see why not. It's a member of the grass family, and if grass can grow there why not cane?
