Right now I'm eating lettuce from my garden! I've also got some tomato plants in bloom, and corn and beans coming up. n

never thought I'd be a veggie gardener, but I know now that I can't wait til next year.

Presently, I have 2 or 3 small but hearty dill plants, 2 basil and lavendar, though I'm not sure if this variety of lavendar is edible.

Want to get some tomatoes and def. watermelon!

Have horrible dirt here, tried composting but the dogs got into it. Read on another thread that digging straw in can help. Will have to try that - fertilizer, esp. organic, is spendy!

Wow contessa, where do you live!?!?! That sounds awesome!

I never though of kiwi! I thought it would only grow in the land down under!

Today I planted some seeds in pots:
watermelon
pumpkin
tomato
red pepper
green bean
zuchini
lamb's quarters
carrot
beets

We'll see what happens! I haven't had much success and these seeds are a wee bit old, packaged for 2006-2008.

Oh well - you gotta play to win!

I'll give it another go!

hey i think theres a kiwi that will grow at least in climates like seattle and ireland, dont know about anywhere colder, but i think they are small like "kiwi berries". there are also tiny berry-sized persimmons that that foraging guy has on his page from foraging in central park so those might grow cold climate too

I live in Delaware on 1/2 acre of land in a small neighborhood. We put in a big raised bed a few years ago and ever since then we've been taking steps to incorporate as much edible landscaping as possible. One of my "flower" beds is all herbs, the other is the 3 kiwi vines and we'll be putting in blueberries beside those soon. We have strawberry plants in the woods and in hanging baskets on the porch. Along the front walkway I have a boat load of arugula plus some spinach in a half whiskey barrel. Once DS's swingset is gone (probably not for another couple of years though) I'll be turning that raised bed area into another veggie garden plot and using the current plot for melons and other runners. We also share with our neighbors who grow tons of stuff too. Usually they grow zucchini and squash so we don't bother, then we share them.

The kiwi vines are arctic kiwis, which are bred for this type of climate. They are EXTREMELY cold hardy. We only just planted them last year though so we've got a LONG time to go before they bear. It takes them about 7 - 10 yrs. to fruit. I had never heard of them before and picked them up on a whim at the nursery one day. They are HUGE now.

At some point in the future we're thinking of planting either fruit trees or a freestanding fence with berries along the property line as well as a designated strawberry patch.

I'm so excited as my husband built 5 (6'x'3') raised beds this year.

We've got tomatoes, zucchini, cukes, yellow squash, sweet peppers, 2 stevia plants, lots of cilantro, basil, oregano, thyme and mint in a pot on the deck.

I don't know what's growing in and around our compost pile (and in our beds) - looks like zucchini maybe. I'm going to have to pull them but I hate to do it! *Ü*

oooooooooooooo- This thread is back up there!

Previously, T-bird posted:

So far - the broccoli and tomatoes are 3-4" in their little pots! They're so cute!

Carrots and beets have poked up - still looking very thin and fragile.

One green bean looked just about to poke through - hope it is anyway!

Still waiting on zucchini, pumpkin and watermelon - these take some time to germinate, and I've read not to give up on them for 6 weeks - at least the pumpkin and watermelon.

Also, still waiting on the lambsquarters and red peppers.

Lots of excitement ahead....:p

These are growing in my flower garden, well until tomorrow when I plant my wildflower seeds there ARE my flower garden. I started them three years ago from two tiny plants I took from a field of lupines while I was trail running.

Lots of spinach, chard, parsley, and basil, basil, basil! We wanted to keep it simple and grow things that we know will thrive in the northland! We're still getting frost warnings here! Also, just wanted to concentrate on all things green smoothie! :)

I've got lettuce! Heirloom leafy lettuce that I got from Earthbound Farms :)
I also have bunching onions, and nasturtiums, and three tomato plants (with flowers on them)
I have kale, and arugula (Rocket), and beets
spinach and swiss chard
carrots and parsley (still very, very small)
Radishes
strawberries, sage, thyme, rosemary, mint
I have a container garden of "greens mix" and a container of "mustard mix".
One basil plant.
Primroses and marigolds.
Lemon balm.
A few garlic cloves are growing greens, too.
We have 6 well established blueberry bushes (loaded with still-green berries).
A plum tree (had some blossoms, hopefully we'll get some fruit)
An apricot tree (no blossoms this year. Maybe next year)
Two female Artic Kiwi vines and one male. Probably no fruit for a few years on those.

I've been harvesting greens, and radishes, and some of the young onions, and a bit of the herbs already. I made some lovely Salad rolls tonight, in fact, using all sorts of greens from the garden! (recipe and photos on my blog)

I have been working like a crazy animal, trying to reclaim my yard and vegeatable garden, as well as peace of mind. I finally had to do the most unthinkable thing against my gardening religion. I had to use round-up on the thistle, and just today I reclaimed one 3'x6'x12" box. This box was the least affected. I have four more to go, the others are full of it, it came to me in some horse manure two years ago. I was unable to garden at all last year. If anyone knows how bad this thistle is, it is like a creature from the black lagoon horror story, for a gardener. I have to wait for the rest of it to die, and probably spray some more, that I misssed. Oh the $$ I spent on my veggies, that I usually grow. I did get some herbs in the barrels, and some zukes and cukes in today. I'll do some beets, beans, chard, and climbing spinach, tommorrow. I'll be so happy, but it sure has been a mostly cold, wet spring here in the Midwest.
