View Full Version : Blend/Strain or Juicing Wheatgrass Which?

Okay, so I can afford BOTH a slow rpm juicer and a high-speed blender. I just saw some vids on YouTube by a Blindguru who claims that because the cell walls are broken at such high speeds that you get more nutrients when you blend and then strain greens such as wheatgrass. .

Hmmmmm, doesn't the high speed also destroy more enzymes?

He also says though - and this sounds logical - that all you get from a slow juicer is the liquid, whereas you get more benefits from the broken cells when you use the blender..

And re the enzyme thing - aren't many food enzymes destroyed during digestion anyway? so do we really need to worry about enzymes being whipped around in a high-speed blender?

So, this is not a question of which is better, juicing or blending as both have their benefits. Rather, mine is a question - specifically for wheatgrass, which can only be blended and strained OR can be extracted using a juicer.

I can do both. If in a hurry, I'd do the Vita-Mix and strain in a nutmilk bag, but if not in a hurry?......which one?

Thanks everyone. I know there are other wheatgrass threads, but none seemed to address this specific question.

On a side note - there's a thread going here currently about problems ordering from BlindGuru. You didn't say you were ordering from him though, just that you had watched him.

Personally, I've got a Champion Juicer and a BlendTec. We grow our own wheat grass and I use the BlendTec and a nut milk bag. *Ü*

when you use the blender to juice the wheatgrass it gets heated up. i know... i've done it myself. when you use the juicer (one that can do wheatgrass like a greenstar) it doesn't get heated.

so... imo... the juicer is the way to go.

Aleesha,

Thanks for the reply....I literally just made some wheatgrass in my Vita-Mix. It was not even warm. I mixed in a tiny bit of liquid though...some fresh o.j. and some lemon. I was also feeling rather "saintly" LOL, as I gathered up a bunch of stinging nettles and juiced those along with it...and of course, strained it in a nut milk bag.

So, IMO, it's not a heat issue...more than that...I'm looking at the nutrient and perhaps the enzyme side of things and do understand that if it were heated that would be a prob....

And Debb. Thanks for the info. I was not even aware of Blindguru until I saw his vids.

I vote for blending! And no matter what they say, I still believe wheat grass is good for your teeth - who needs dental insurance (http://www.goldenrule.com/health/dental.shtml)? But with the blender, i'm a perpetual novice, and like things very raw, beyond what many people will consume :D

I've also been blending my wheatgrass. I grow 3 large trays at a time. I blend it in the BlendTec and I add just enough water to get it going - I also add 2-3 ice cubes, that way it does not heat up! *Ü*
