View Full Version : A side effect of asparagus

I do not know if this is the right place to post this. But I ate about 25 stalks of fresh asparagus last night. When I went to the restroom, of course my pee smelled funny. I was thinking that maybe everyone's did this. So I decided to look it up. I tried a search on the board about it but could not find one. Does this happen to anyone else? I must have eaten too much of it.

Here is what I found: Asparagus, a green vegetable belonging to the lily family, has one notorious side effect for some diners who eat enough of it. Within a half-hour of asparagus consumption, some people notice their urine has acquired a very pungent odor, often compared to rotting cabbage, ammonia or rotten eggs. The effects of asparagus on urine are generally fleeting and harmless, but it's not necessarily the consumer's finest hour, bodily excretion-wise.

The good news is that asparagus does not affect everyone. Studies conducted on the "asparagus urine" phenomenon (aren't you glad you didn't volunteer!) indicate that roughly 40 to 50 percent of those tested developed the distinctive odor. Surprisingly enough, there is also a segment of the population who cannot smell the sulphurous fumes of asparagus-laced urine. It is believed that both the generation of the odoriferous urine and the ability to smell it are based on genetics. Only those with a certain gene can break down the chemicals inside the asparagus into their smelly components, and only those with the proper gene can smell the results of that chemical breakdown.

Scientists are still not entirely sure which set of chemical compounds contained in asparagus actually cause the smelly pee. The stalks themselves do not acquire a similar odor as they are prepared, so whatever happens most likely happens after ingestion. Experts believe that those with a certain gene produce a digestive enzyme which breaks down the asparagus into various chemical compounds. One of those compounds is called methyl mercaptan, which is the same chemical which gives a skunk its defensive smell. One theory suggests that asparagus breaks down quickly in the body and an enzyme releases methyl mercaptan, which eventually goes through the kidneys and is excreted as a waste product in the urine.

Yes, this happens to me. Strangely it is not at all unpleasant and I find it ironic that I actually look forward to this as it tells me my body is metabolizing things properly.

The metabolites likely come from asparagusic acid contained in the asparagus plant. I find it interesting that some people produce it, some don't and some can smell it, and some can't.

I was talking with a man from Ireland recently and this subject came up. He had never eaten asparagus until he came to the US. He was on the verge of going to the doctor to find out what was wrong before he found out about this issue.

I say eat your asparagus and enjoy it - all aspects of it. :)

In the book Alkalize Or Die, it says Asparagus is "A very powerful acid reducer and known therapy for cancer. Its high ammonia content literally plummets one into alkalinity in a short period of time. In the past, asparagus has been considered acid-forming because it so quickly detoxifies the person, leaving acid residues in urine specimens immediately after ingestion."

Yup. Happens to me. Interestingly, I am the only one in my family who gets smelly asparagus pee and I am also the only one in my family who can smell it . . . thankfully.

I was wondering how many of us on the board had it. That would be a great experiment! I would love to know if it happened to my husband but if a veggie even touched his lips his system would go into shock.

Some poeple might not be able to either taste or smell it, it's a genetic thing, same as people who can/cannot taste a certain compound in brussell sprouts and broccoli. You are either a taster or a non taster.

We did a lab experiment at uni to see who was a taster/non taster for the broccoli/brussell sprout compound. Ten cups with dilutions of the compound increasing up the line were placed on the bench. We each got disposable ice cream sticks and tasted each dilution. I could taste the compound from the weakest dilution.

Most people couldn't get past about the 3rd strongest dilution because of an automatic gag reflex. One girl who was a non taster, couldn't taste anything. She picked up the last cup with the strongest dilution and drank the whole damn thing! We all dry retched. She said it just tasted like water!

So I think most people's pee smells, but that they can't smell it themselves.

How do we have a pee themed thread!?
