I mean, consciously drinking a certain amount, such as 1.5 litres.
Some people think this is important to rehydrate the body and stimulate the elimination process.
What do you think?

Absolutely! You've gone how many hours w/out water? Definitely need to hydrate.

I can not drink water until about 8:30AM. I drink my smoothie and don't touch water until after. I just can't stand the thought of water first thing. I LOVE water but not first. Weird but that's me.

Thanks for your responses.
Revvell, I've done the conversion. 1.5 litres = 50 ounces (approx). Is that too much?
Besides that, do you consciously drink a certain amount of water each day or just when you're thirsty? How much do you drink in the morning? Do you do it first thing? Do you put lemon in it?

I don't know how much is too much. I drink about a quart ~ half orange juice, half water, first thing starting before training, during and after. I drink about 3 of those a day along with 3 pints of smoozie and lots of watery fruits. Watermelon is becoming a favorite for these hot summer days again.
Thanks for your responses.

so 1 quart is a little under a litre... 1.5 litres seemed a bit too much for me...but a lot of people swear by the health benefits of drinking 1.5 litres upon arising... around a litre is probably better for me...

I drink a lot of water. I'm always thirsty, and especially first thing the morning. But I think you should listen to your body and drink when your thirsty.

lucky lemons...i have been listening to my body, and do tend to sip water a lot throughout the day...it's just that i've been reading about some people who drink a lot of water in the morning...saying that we wash our body on the outside, we need to do the same with our body on the inside in the morning... instead of lots of little sips, i'm wondering if i should have larger amounts at a time...
i do like the simplicity of 'listening to my body' in that regard though...and may stick with that approach...i'm not sure...

I drink 1.5 quarts in the morning over a two hour period. A pint when I first get up, another pint 30-60 minutes later, followed by a pint of herbal cleansing tea.

RawKnitster...do you consciously try to drink a certain amount of water later in the day, or is it just intuitive for the rest of the day?

I walk first thing in the morning, so I don't start drinking serious amounts of water until I get home. I don't want to get caught so far from home without a bathroom! But honestly, a few sips to whet my whistle is all I need first thing, as I don't feel thirsty anyway when I get up.

Queen Bean, During the rest of the day I usually have another cup or two of herbal tea, and another pint of water in a green smoothie. Other than that I don't think about water again unless I'm active, or it is hot, and/or I feel thirsty.

i think drinking water first thing in the morning is great ...keep a bottle beside your bed drink a litre while lying in bed .. it will quickly work its way down and you start the day off flushing out the nighttimes gunk :)

I keep a bottle next to my bed and drink all of it as soon as i open my eyes. i want water, and i can't get up if i don't get it. I drink 1/2-1 quart/litre, yum, it's the best way to start a day!
1.5 liters? Sounds like a bit much. A lot of that would just fill your bladder unless you're talking about spacing it over several hours.
I drink a glass (maybe 16 oz.) right before bed and right when I get up every day. I think it helps. I HAVE TO do it these days because I'm doing a Bikram yoga challenge for 60 days and don't want to shrivel up into a prune. ;) It seems like a good habit no matter who you are though!

Whenever I start researching this: about water and weight loss, whether to drink water when you're not thirsty, how much we need a day and since your kidneys filter all the water you drink, more than you really need makes them work that much harder and reduces their effect in the long run, I get very different opinions from all kinds of experts, health practitioners, diet gurus.
So what I've come up with for me is I mostly drink when I am thirsty (and differentiate between dry mouth and actual body thirst) and eat a diet that's very juicy. I really like the idea of protecting my kidneys, so that concept peaked my interest.
I like to be careful about who says what and who is paying them to do their study. The thing about drinking so much water pretty much started when bottled water became hip. There is no reason, in my opinion, to water log myself unless I am exercising heavily or it's really hot and I've been sweating.

I have 16-24 ozs. in the am. It helps and I usually have a BM shortly after drinking my water.

I tend to agree with you rawlight. A few raw food gurus do suggest to get most of your water from your food, or to just drink when thirsty...namely david wolfe, sapoty brook, roxy dillon... I've settled on the middle ground... 500ml upon a rising with lemon juice (1/2 litre/quart)...and then at least another 1.5 litres for the rest of the day...(which is not hard for me to do, because I always have a water bottle with me and often get thirsty). I'm sure I'll drink more in fact, but I want it to be natural, not forced. I don't want to strain my kidneys...

I drink a half liter bottle of water as soon as I get up. I then do my morning workout. I eat my first meal after I've had my shower. I read somewhere that drinking water an hour or so when you get up and before you eat breakfast helps to rid your body of toxins.

i make it my tast to drink a 0.5 liter water bottle every morning as i drive to work. I many times forget to drink enough during the day, so this way i KNOW i'll have a good start. besides, that's what gets my intestines moving well :D

Ditto...I drink a liter (32oz) give or take, upon rising. I also mix it with the juice of 1 lemon.
I love the effect (same here) and I feel it hydrates me first thing in the morning. I eat an hour later. Most times its a green smoothie, other times fruit of my craving.
ALWAYS 1 liter lemon water upon rising....ALWAYS. Just FEELS right to ME!

I also drink when I wake in the morning. I folow what the old european natural doctores always advise; start the day with two big glasses of water and finish the day the same way (you might want to build up to that slowly to get your blader uses to the amound of water when you sleep, but it is posible to do with out having to wake in the night to pee).
I was just thinking about you guys who says that you drink 2-3-4 liters of water doring the day. Som says that we shouldent drink more than 2 - 2 1/2L a day otherwise we flushes out important minerals. Do any of you know about this ? is that true ?
Anyway im kind of impressed that you can drink that much. Im lucky if I get up to 1 1/2 - 2 L a day. Ok maby it is a bad habit from my job, when you work in a shop alone and you cant close up shop to go to the bathroom when you have customors. So I get out of the habit of drinking to much so I dont have to go  I drink in the morning thoug and night.

I used to drink sooooo much water, like 4-5 liters per day. I'd always heard about people eventually requiring less water when they go on a raw diet. That isn't happening to me until now, after about 1.5 years of eating this way. Now I drink about 1-2 liters. I drink some in the morning when I get up and some at night/in the evening.
I like spring water that I bottle myself at the source the best. I try to drink this water exclusively.

I agree with rawlight. I drink only when I'm thirsty, and I never get thirsty because I eat raw food. According to Dr. Emmet Densmore, "In a natural state man would get all the water needed from his fruits; digestion goes forward much better when the gastric juice is not diluted with fluids." Water also dilutes electrolytes.

When I was kid - I never drank any water - it tasted terrible to me. Chicago tap water....
Then bottled water came out in my 20's - so I drank distilled, but soon found it tasted like plastic. Then whole foods had a distiller where you could bottle your own - so that was great.
Finally got into britta filters. Will get something "fancier" soon.
I could go with the "drink when your thirsty" mantra - but I see myself as recovering from a life time of dehydration. So how does my body know? and can I trust it's instincts?
Will it ever adjust to the "correct setting".
IDK.
Some observations I've made about water:
When I get dehydrated, I stop being thirsty.
Sometimes when I get up and drink 2-3 glasses of water - just because that's what I do - I get thirsty and want some more.
I usually aim for 4 glasses first thing before the wheat grass juice . Sometimes I stop at 2 - sometimes end up with 6 or even more.
So I guess I give my body a start - prime the pump so to speak, and then see what it wants.....

The problem with "Drink when your Thirsty" concept is that many of us have miscontruded "Thirst for Hunger" so, learning how to recognize and differentiate can be challenging for some until we learn.
