My boxes are in YEAH!!!!! Hubby built them yesterday. Next comes the filling. It says several different types of compost. Not sure what they want here. Manure is a different catagory of filling so I will have to read a bit more about this one.
We have an organic farm nearby for good cow manure but was thinking of adding chicken clickin aslo.
Can one plant wheatgrass outside?

Yes! Square foot garden rocks! I have just 3 boxes and some free range plants in my community garden plot and they are doing great. Manure is good, just not too much, particulary cow and bird manure is very potent in nitrogen and too much might burn plants.

I hope mine is fine. I used composted so it is not suppose to burn.
I did use all kinds of bought manure. Even got a bag of chicken manure. Hubby did not like that one

My BF just got her, SF garden boxes in, she did everything according to the book, Mel's mix and all, but guess what? she has thistle too. Her garden is on a freshly cleared brush area on her new property.

I fit into the category of novice gardener. It's a skill I feel we MUST develop. Tried a square foot garden once years and years ago -- okay, decades ago --went exactly by the book but did not get much harvest at all. I guess I gave up.

This year, I put in a strip garden - on the back fence. Just have tomatoes and peppers in there. Then, my son has a new Sq ft garden -- we made 3x8 raised beds, against a fence, put a fence around and a gate on each open end. So he has his own little closed in 8x9 garden. Again, mostly tomatoes and peppers. We just got to it all late but at least it's in and he waters them all. I told him I'd pay him market prices for the produce from both.

We need to plant LOTS more variety. I did not order seeds in time...

Greens are a high priority. Last fall, for a short time I nurtured an indoor lettuce garden; never got as far as a harvest. But I did get the seed germination technique part to work. We used the plastic containers that organic spinach comes in (at Sam's Club). They are deep and great for this.

In our area, cool weather crops supposedly do much better in the fall. So soon, we should start some seeds for that and plant out in August or so?

Well-, the books say, that cucumbers taste bitter, if watering is eratic, so keep it evenly spaced out. As for shape- I put my on supports, so they hang down, and this way grow straighter, but still the ones that get tangled between wines, are not very straight- still delicious though!

hmmm.. well mine are always trellised on 15 foot cattle guard. so they have plenty of space to climb!.. and i have watered them regularly. :/ i think i am just bad with cucumbers. LOL
