Hello everyone, I have been eating raw for 18 days, and the past couple of days I have noticed when I eat something I get this "weird" taste in my mouth that really makes the food that I'm eating not taste very good. I'm not sure how to describe the taste, maybe bitter?
It happens every time, it doesn't matter if I'm eating fruit or veggies, even though it taste worse and stronger when I eat the veggies.
I LOVE avocado, and I couldn't finish the one I was eating yesterday because that "taste" covered up the flavor in the avocado.
The only thing I added in my diet the past 2 days was juicing. I have a champion juicer, and I started juicing beets, carrots, celery, cucumbers, a little fresh ginger, and apple. I don't think it is this though, because the taste in my mouth is not there, until I eat something.
I really haven't been able to enjoy my raw food because of this taste. It is very powerful, and overtakes the food that I'm eating. I haven't eaten grapefruit in many years, but that is kind of the taste I'm trying to describe, maybe grapefruit after taste.
What could this be? I don't know if I can continue eating raw if all my food is going to taste this way
Any ideas??
Thanks so much!!

is the bad taste in mouth you're getting only happen when you eat a mono food? meaning nothing combinded with something else... like just a banana and nothing mixed with it...?
if so.. this means your body is saying it's had enough food. this can not happen with cooked foods nor mixing of raw foods.
i'm not a doctor .. but may mean your body is saying it want to fast for right now. *edit.. or wants something else to eat.

OR... could be the taste change transition??? i know in the beginning foods didn't taste so great until my taste buds changed/healed some from the cooked foods.
but my first post is to be greatly considered... my opnion. perhaps others know more or more advice and experiences.

I don't think it's telling me I've had enough to eat, because it's happening with the first bite .
I'm really doing well with my food combining, so I don't think that would be it.
Another way to describe it would be, maybe, a "chemical" taste, even though I am eating organic foods. And it wouldn't be that I had gotten some non-organic foods by accident because it happens with all the foods I'm eating. Like today I had some organic raisins, and the taste that I'm talking about came up immediately with the first bite. It was like they had been sprayed with something that coated my mouth, but I know that they haven't been.
I know it's very strange, and I may not get any answers, but I thought someone may have experienced something like this??
Thank you for your help!!

yeah, i've only gotten that bad chemical taste after eating at least a few bites of a mono meal.
again.. that chemical taste can not happen when we mix raw foods or eat cooked foods. it's part of the reason people over eat because mixing and cooked foods stops that natural body function.
i hope you solve your problem and is nothing serious.

I am on a lot of supplements that my Naturopath has put me on to help with my Gall Bladder, Liver, Pancreas, and Spleen.
He also has me taking some homeopathy things for detox.
Do you think that may be causing it?
I started thinking about that as I sat here.

I was just thinking when I read your 1st post that it sounds like "Detoxing" and then I saw this post. I'm sure that's what it is. When I did a Green Smoothie fast for a week I had the smell of exhaust in my nose for a week at least. I don't live in the city anymore; I live in the mountains. So, it was detox. Hang in there and drink lots of water to flush it out. Even Lemon water is really good to flush toxins out.
Oh Welcome! :)

i would phone and ask him since he recommended it to you hopefully he knows his stuff well enough to know if this could be causing bad tastes. it just sounds weird if it's only happening with mono foods and not smoothies.. you know. why i leaned more to what i was mentioning about earlier. but i don't know for sure... lets us know when you figure it out please. :)

When I first went raw I had a metallic taste in my mouth for awhile. It went away so I figured it was detox.

Wow, I never connected it to detox but I had the faint smell of cigarette smoke of and on the past couple days. Woo Hoo, that is the first sign of detox I have had. Cool:D

Thanks so much everyone!!! I can tell this is going to be a great support group for me!!
I'm about to run to the store, so I will post more later, I need to do my introduction ;)
So far today I have not had the "taste" in my mouth, but so far I have only had lemon water upon waking, and I juiced a bunch on kale, romaine, beets, carrots, and an apple, and did not have any bad/funny taste when I drank it.
I got to thinking, I wonder if it only gives me that taste when I have to chew the foods? Maybe it has something to do with my digestion or something?
I will update later.
Thanks again, everyone!!!

Sounds like you might do well with an extended juice fast/feast. I would also forgo the supplements. Your gallbladder/liver/spleen/pancreas will do just fine on juice. I know naturopaths mean well and are far better than MDs (my "regular" dr is a naturopath), but sometimes I think they are really no different. They just substitute a supplement for a drug. The one I used to work for didn't know a supplement he didn't like. Check into Natural Hygiene, you will learn that it's really all unnecessary, if you eat/drink raw fruits and vegetables.

As I look at it intuitively, I see for you Cathy it's the detoxification of chemical food processing. All of the chemical additives which are added to processed food to affect flavor, shelf life, color, texture, etc. Wonderful for you that's it's being released from your body and you're tasting it in your mouth as it makes it's final departure.
When I had the chemical metallic taste in my mouth during my own detox it was about releasing environmental pollutants out of my body as I live in the City and used to travel alot for business -- frequently in airports, in cities & countries with high pollution rates like Beijing etc. I think it varies for us all, but it's definately detoxification. And keep it mind it could continue for years, showing up in many different hats. It's a continual process for some of us because of the environment we live in today. Our bodies are constantly cleansing, I think we're just more in tune with it and have increased sensitivity to it when we're Raw. Just my opinion.

I have had detox and cleansing of many things. At one point i had a very bitter taste and even water was bitter. Other times I had a mold smell in my nostrils. Other times cig smoke. This is, to me, all stuff I have been exposed to coming out.
Bitter was definitely liver detox for me. Givin the fact you are on these supplements for liver n such, seems that might what is going on.
I enjoy these times when my body is releasing old stuff. It passes.

I had this very same thing happen about 3-4 weeks into my diet change, and I found if I scraped my tongue, the taste lessened considerably. It seemed to be candida, but I'm not completely sure. Lots of white stuff just kept coming off my tongue. I had to scrape every day once or twice a day, and after a few days it passed. I don't have a tongue scraper, I just used a metal spatula. ;) Worked great! It's worth a try!

I have heard about this, what brand do you buy, and can I get it at a health food store?
My gall bladder is shot, my liver is not functioning well, pancreas, and spleen all have issues as well. I have chronic constipation, and even eating all raw, I still can't "go" without help. The doctor said it was because my gall bladder was not producing what it should, and I can't digest foods very well.
I also tested high for environmental toxins like formaldehyde, exhaust, and gasoline. There were a few others but I can't remember what else came back high.
I am willing to try anything, so please keep the suggestions coming.
Thank you

ummm were you asking me about chlorella? :D
i followed the suggestion of a couple members here on the forum to take yaeyama chlorella by source naturals. and i am so inlove with this stuff and am so pleased with their product i feel no need to try a different brand. i am very highly sensitive to energies and within 10 seconds of swallowing this with water or OJ my energy sky rockets and aura widens and all this cool stuff happens to me. my eyes see better too.
whatever you try if you chose to... make sure it is organic and i learned here first and validated it on the net with write ups... you have to be careful who you buy it from. so far i trust source naturals.

i just made myself a chlorella drink and remembered i forgot to answer where it can be found!
i take powder form. it can be found in healthfood stores but if you buy it in person be prepared to spend about 60 for a pound. i bought mine on amazon for 31 dollars and this included free shipping! amazon has free shipping on some items if it comes from their warehouse and not their clients who sell on their site.
some people take pills. i am sticking with powder form and it's more natural. it doesn't taste bad either.

I know this posting is old, but when I googled "metallic taste in mouth detox," this thread came up second, so I think it might be helpful to share what I've come up with: PINE NUTS (!) can cause these symptoms, too.
I'm currently trying to detoxify my body, eating mostly raw, blending, etc. and couldn't figure out why I had this taste. Turns out, I ate a handful of pine nuts two days ago. It's believed that either stale or imported (Chinese) inedible varieties are being sold all over and causing this new phenomenon.
Hopefully this information is helpful; not sure if it is relevant to the poster's issue, but it could be helpful to everyone.

Funny, I was just going to suggest that it might be the phenomenon called "pine mouth". I have luckily never experienced it myself but I have friends who have so I'm always a bit worried about eating pine nuts now.

This same exact thing happened to me. I googled on it and found that quite a few people have experienced this a day or two after eating pine nuts. Especially pine nuts from China or that have oxidized. It turns out I ate a handful of pine nuts a few days before I started getting the chemical nasty taste in the back of my mouth each time I ate. And I hadn't eaten straight pine nuts since I was a kid, maybe 30 years ago. But I was amazed when I google on this and saw the pine nuts thing, and remembered my own eating of pine nuts.
Unfortunately, I had a tooth ache develop in a molar about the same time, which I'm now thinking was coincidental. But I assumed these had to be related and went to the dentist. The dentist remove my filling (which was put on less than a month ago), put in some chemicals, and put the filling back on. That is so painful and miserable, it would really be a shame if it was all about the pine nuts and that my tooth was fine.
Anyway, look into pine nuts.

I had a similar thing though it was when I woke up in the early hours of the morning with a metallic taste in my mouth. Pretty sure it is detox. I would get onto the Chorella as it will chelate and eliminate any metals you are detoxing from your body...probably chemicals as well as they will have a metallic component.

I was reading this thread thinking 'pine mouth! it's pine mouth!' but y'all got to it before me. I am SO wary of eating pine nuts anymore because this happened to me about a year ago. I got a salad from a local restaurant and there were pine nuts on it. I'd heard of this symptom but thought it was bunk and proceeded to eat the salad. Lo and behold, the next day everything I ate tasted terrible. I had that bad taste in my mouth for about 3-4 weeks! I've got a tiny bit of pine nuts in my fridge that I know don't affect me in that way and I'm savoring them...

Me too!! About 6 months ago I had a dose of 'pine mouth' from a raw pine nut pesto I made. It took me an internet search to figure it out and it lasted about 10 days. I haven't touched a pine nut since!

Hey there!
So many people have already given you a lot of useful advice, so i'm just going to add a few things. The general rule is that when you experience strange tastes, there is either a problem with your taste perception or sense of smell. The perceptual distortion is called dysgeusia.
When the problem persists, there can be several, more serious causes: gum infections, abscesses, gingivitis, heavy metal poisoning, hormonal imbalances, different medications, acid reflux disease or just poor oral hygiene. If you're getting it right after eating, there are more chances it is acid reflux disease. If this is becoming a serious problem, you should see certified physician, since acid reflux disease can become a very dangerous health issue if it goes untreated for a long time.

Are you taking any medications? (You don't actually need to answer that!) Years ago I took Lunesta for sleep issues (on a SAD diet) and it made EVERYTHING taste like soap to the point where I couldn't bear to eat ANYTHING!
