(jeez, i feel like i've started a gazillion threads today..)
I watched Shazzie talk about raw chocolate and cacao on a british tv show, and i noticed how she used the word "high" a lot. That cacao gave a natural high, with no side effects, that it makes you happy and so on.
Now, i react very strongly to the word "high". I am totally against everything mind altering, i have a very straight edge approach and dislike how she puts cacao and other superfoods in the group of mind altering substances.
I feel very uncomfortable, because to me rawness is about not sedating or altering your mind, but to be frank and honest and in the moment.
What do you think? How do you react to the word "high" in a raw context?

I don't eat raw cacao myself, i use carob in banana smoothies sometimes. I might have a raw chocolate treat very once in a while but i've definitely noticed the addictive qualities. I wouldn't say i ever felt high on chocolate but i did notice that i always went through phases where every day you needed to have some chocolate and when i ran out or forgot about it i wouldnt want any for months.
There are a lot of raw fooders that abstain from raw cacao. It is very similar to the coffee bean, coffee beans are extremely toxic raw, hence they are roasted for human consumption. So raw cacao beans are toxic as well and traditionally cooked as well before being processed for the public... I just find that anything that seems sketchy even if its raw i'm not comfortable consuming regularly and would feel better if it was closer to never.
From the beginning of time anything man tasted that was addicting or stimulating he praised it, shared it, sold it, promoted it etc. We can't trust that just because something is popular and addictive that the raw version is good for us at all. The government is always saying how good wine and chocolate is for it's antioxidant properties. Everything they promote is actually slanted and more harmful than good, so i tend to question ANYTHING that is seen as normally accepted by the community.
Spices and herbs are stimulants, you don't see other animals gnawing on them or eating them in their diets so it really leads me to believe if i wouldnt eat it whole and raw why would i ever make myself eat it in another form.

I don't get what others have called a "high" from eating anything with cacao. For me, it has a grounding, focusing affect. But I have had what most would term ADD since I can remember.
I've heard a lot of people use the word "high" about being raw as well, like "the raw high". Would you let that deter you from eating raw foods?
If you eat cacao in moderate quantities, I don't see where there'd be any problem, but some people do have have different reactions than mine. I say if you want to try it to see how you like it as part of your food program, then do. If you don't, then don't. It doesn't have to be any more difficult than that really. :)

I love raw chocolate. I eat it in moderation and really have no high from it. It just feels good and tastes super, which makes it a go for me.
Raw and living energy foods are blissfull. I get blissed on salad, green juice, avocados, and sprouts. I love it.
When you hear folks speak of that "edge" they are looking for, thats what thye are referring to. The super light and airy and blissed out feeling of super charged energy.
That is raw!
I guess if cacao is bad someone better let D.W.know...hahahaha

Hell...I get a "high" off of a banana, mango and some kale with a bit of water. I'm NOT playin around here. I DO! I really have paid attention to MY body after drinking (something most ppl don't) and felt a "high".
Define "high" to you. What is high to you?

i absolutely relate the word high with cacao
and immediately place it together with "high....tened consciousness"
all plants and foods and people and energy has a vibration and consciousness
when we take it directly into our system and being we merge with the consciousness, intelligence, nature and properties of its own system and being
to me cacao has a very high state of living consciousness and when i receive it i too experience the high state of being that it has to share
no doubt about it!
i have had profound and life altering experiences after taking cacao that have been transformative and positive.
and like you i consider myself "straight-edge" don't drink, don't do any intoxicants, etc etc.
all food is medicine, at the right dose at the right time it will help you at the wrong dose at the wrong time it will harm you. this is true for ALL food

I don't react. I FEEL!

I listen...pay attention, and if it FEELS right...try it...if it works for me I USE it.
I guess I don't REACT to words.....LOL
Cept when someone asks me how I react to the word "high" in a raw context. ;)
Just my honest feelings.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts
I may have not been completley clear about what meant, though (which happens a lot, as english is not my first language ;))
I intended to ask about your approach to the word "high" being used in such a drug-free context as the raw life style.
When i said i react to the word i mean that i find it to be a word connected with negative things, and is absolutley not something i seek to experience. i am aware that what you mean when you say you get high from cacao or bananas (:p) it is a totally different high than what drug addicts talk about or seek. (i have eaten cacao myself, and i felt nothing but the flavour of it :o)
But for me the word high is charged with so many things, and it made me uneasy when shazzie used it because i thought "arn't there better words to describe a healthy, energized, happy life? Is high really the word we wanna use?"
i guess what i mean is that for me "high" stands for not being comfortable in your normal state and using some kind of substance to experience something else ("high") instead of making your normal state more pleasant. For me raw is "to make the normal state more pleasant", why i think "High" is such and out-of-place word.

What about "Wired"....Cacao has Caffine and for some it can leave you wired, light headed, BP rises, you have a Burst of Energy. There are a lot of words with more meaning and other words I call stolen.
High is just another word. There are more than one kind of High. You can get High on a RAW Life.

i agree with you on it, when i make a smoothie with bananas, at least three i get that "high" you are talking about and i always always have something around the eyes,i mean they are wide opened...i feel in my eyes, around too...
i don't know how to describe cause english is not my language...maybe it is the sugar, but i noticed it with raw cacao too...so...

I have to agree with green jeanie. Cacao is a positive for me. I am so sensitive to caffiene I can't even drink white tea. Yet cacao doesn't make me wired or hyper, doesn't raise my BP, or get me high. It does make me smile. :)
I don't use it all the time because I consider it special. Try to take it away from me and I'll put up a fight. Hmmmm, maybe I am addicted. ;)
