View Full Version : Raw garlic problem..

Ok, this has never happened before. I have never had problems with raw garlic, until the day before yesterday. I had recently gotten my vitamix and was experimenting with recipes so I made some of their hummus with raw garlic clove and had some of that on mushrooms and then I felt a bit weird after but anyway was ok then at "dinner time" I made a raw marinara sauce which I have made before and been fine but this time I think I added a little too much onion and one clove of garlic but it was pretty big, so after I feel like it's coming out of my eyes(I didn't eat the whole thing, about a third), and then feel like I have indulged in cooked bread, and today I feel like sh*t. I mean I feel like I had a giant binge on bad food... Even yesterday I only had 2 apples and a banana and a alpro soy yogurt (not raw obv but I'm not fully raw) because I couldn't eat anymore and the apple came straight up!
So, for me, no more raw garlic, I guess my body is saying to stay away... It's no big deal for recipes as I can substitute it for other things and I don't think I'll miss it too much.
Anyone else have similar reactions to raw onion/garlic?
Any advice would be great, thanks!

When i eat raw garlic a) i get a terrible burning pain/cramps in my stomach and b)fart like a horse about ten hours after eating it.
It's strong stuff! ok, at least for me..
But, i'm not staying away from it, mor like trying to get used to it because of the strong anti-inflamatory aspects of eating it.
They say garlic is a powerful cleanser. Maybe you just had too much. Is there any way you may have picked up a stomach bug somewhere?
Now that I think of it, I've always cooked it. I have not had any since going raw.

When I have raw garlic in the evening, I wake up in the morning and feel as though the meal was still in my stomach and had not digested at all. I don't have that problem, if I have the raw garlic at lunch. I read somewhere once that a lot of people shouldn't eat it, but can't remember where I read it and why that is the case.

I know some hard core raw foodists who do not eat onions because they believe onions adversely impact brain activity & communication between the left & right hemispheres. I don't know if this is true or not. I only use raw garlic medicinally now. I use onions for raw gourmet recipes where it's called for. I love onions (for now). ;)

onions and garlic do permeate the blood brain barrier and do impare brain waves. After my first month on raw i couldn't have large amounts of garlic. I used to double or triple it in every recipe but now even the smallest clove is more than enough for me. I've decided to use it only sparingly or else it does make my stomache sick after and i feel crappy the rest of the night.
Also it IS a natural antibacterial but think about it, we WANT GOOD bacteria, not to kill it all by eating antibacterials right? We're so used to killing everything we deem as bad, but without bacteria in general we would be lifeless beings. We are supressing our immune system by eating antibacterial foods and washing all our produce to death it's not giving our body much to work with in terms of friendly flora.

EXACTLY! Veronica. As with many things, a little is great, a lot can be really bad for us.

this is a very good point.
It was my understanding that garlic only kills the unwanted microorganisms.
I'll have to find some research to support this.
