I love kale, as well. It's a bit bitter for me in a smoothie, but I love, love, love kale chips off off of the dehydrator. A little olive oil, sea salt, and lemon. It's really good.

I tried kale in my smoothie twice. They didn't blend as well as the spinach but they were not noticeable.
Now kale chips don't last the night in my house LOL all the family sneaks them. Darn they are eating good stuff and don;t know it. Shhhh don't tell.

I Love Kale in smoothies. I just made my first Kale Salad with sesame seeds, lemon ginger juice, dash of olive oil and some himalayan salt. It was really good. I found myself thoroughly enjoying it and laughing because I would never have imagined I would be shoveling down kale. : )

I put 3 leaves of kale in my smoothies. But I find I only like it with certain fruits like apple or pear or banana. I also add half a lemon - it makes a huge difference in the taste.
I've tried it with mango, pineapple, grapes, strawberries, blueberries but ended up pouring it down the sink - I couldn't drink it. It almost killed me each time wasting the 2-3 pieces of fruit trying to make it taste good so now I just stick with apple and lemon and I love it.
If you love kale - you may enjoy my favorite Kale and Avocado Salad. Here's a YouTube by Karen Knowler. I fix it 1-2 times per week - I crave it. Mmmm . . . *Ü*

Does Kale blend well in smoothies or do you drink chunks of them?

If you have a good blender, it will blend smooth and there will be no chunks floating around.
I use kale in my smoothies minus the stems. I know people save the stems to juice them.

I'm not a fan of kale in smoothies, but I love kale juice. Usuall I make the juice with 2-3 bunches of kale, probably about 20 leaves.
I like kale salads too, but only if they're really well massaged with lots of salt and lemon juice. The fiber in kale irritates my digestion, so juicing and massaging are the way I get my kale in.

I have a cheap blender and it has no problem with kale, but I do rough chop it first, no chunks at all. I use the stems also.

Started to make kale chips the other day, but it was too beautiful and tasty after I'd 'massaged' it with oil and salt. So I cut up some tomatos and added some olives and had a wonderful salad. It never made it to the dehydrator.

I had some collard greens so I tossed those in the dehydrator along with my kale chips. I added garlic powder and a dash of lemon to the collards YUMMY.
MY kale never makes it out of the dehydrator it,it gets eaten before it is even done :D Yep thats me with the green face yum kale

I really don't like kale by itself when raw.
I do juice it... and blend with other greens and an apple...
Or I put it into a smoothie with soymilk, other greens, an apple and banana.
Yum.
I don't really like most greens raw unless juiced or smoothied. :p

haha sprout! yesterday i made this wonderful soup - a few kale leaves, small bunch of cilantro, handful of cold applewood smoked dulse and heated it in the vitamix and drizzled it with evoo. it was so heavenly, rich, and warming - but alas, as usual, it never lasted long enough for a photo....

I was reading online that kale is a very cold hardy green(which makes sense that it grows in cool climate.I also read that it has a slightly sweet taste after being exposed to frost for a few minutes. It does work and the bitter green taste is gone.

Thanks to a passing comment in Alissa's book, I've had my determination to go more "green" really hightened. I can't tolerate a lot of fruit yet so all the green smoothies were going over my head. I missed out on something not realizing it because the smoothies were all about greens and fruit most of the time.
However, my own green smoothie/energy soup has "fruit" in the strict sense just still NO fruit that is of the sugary variety, as it were.
I have found that what seems to be working for me right now is a large cucumber, a tomato, several small or 2 large kale leaves, 1/2 an avocado and some spicy paprika or chilli flakes blended up (yeay, maybe no more ongoing juicing for me ... and can save that as "special", occasional beverage <crossing fingers>). This I'm tolerating very well and, in fact, in just 3 days, I'm able to finally be able to eat some fruit again, something I knew would happen when I figured out my own dietary balance.
I'm still having troubles with my induced hypoglycemia that I've been suffering from for last few years but it's definitely less. Funny, no hypoglemia on cooked but then I go raw and whammo! <sigh> Mal-absorption, thyroid issues but I'm confident I'll get it right eventually. I suspect I should just eat dark greens all the time at every meal. That should fix me right up and then I can take it from there.
Had the shakes this morning, so after a seminar, hot-footed it to the HFS and bought a tabouleh which is mostly dark parsely, which seemed to fix this morning's shakes. It doesn't seem to matter the quantity of regular raw food I eat; it seems that only dark greens in there somewhere stabilize things. Thank god for that comment of Alissa's that I read a couple of days ago or so. It took me right back to where I always go whenever I wonder, bewildered, about all this dietary business ... heck, gorillas eat basically just leaves (all look pretty dark to me) and fruit ... <sigh>. I have to get it into my head and heart that I have to eat like a gorilla: HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY on the DARK GREENS and _some_ fruit!!!! _Then_ I can think about eating some nuts and seeds and sprouts on the side, too. But my focus may probably just have to be on things in that order.
So I'm going to have to change my name to Gorilla Diana, or something; cause eating like a gorilla is probably going to be the way for me to go!
Cheers. :)

JI'm new to this and didn't really know people were blending kale. My first thought this week was that it wouldn't work too well. I don't have a Vitamix and thought my Magic Bullet, though good, might not be enough. But it's turned out to be okay. They currently only have Lacinato kale at my HFS but it blends well enough. The drink comes out quite stringy because the Lacinato doesn't blend completely down but since I'm actually eating this cause my smoothie/energy soup is all about "vegetable" fruits (avocado/tomato), it's not been a problem. If I were drinking a less thick drink and not approaching this as eating a soup, maybe things would be different.
I'm using 5-6 small, tinier leaves or 2 large regular ones of the Lacinato. The bunches seem to be coming with very small leaf size this time around so I need to use more of them to compensate
hth. :)

Here is a mind-blowing idea to do with kale when you have less than 3 minutes to prepare breakfast, including chopping time: Take a piece of black/lacinato/dinosaur kale (so many names for one thing ) and stick a banana on it. Add cinnamon or other seasonings if you wish.
MMmmm! Tonya Kay reccomends it, so I tried it. Tasted wierd at first, but I craved for more and now it's my hero when my alarm clock fails and I am alerted that I have 15 minutes until the school bus will arrive.
